Replacement shredder hammers

I'm on my last corner for the the McKissick that hangs off the back of the Hurlimman most days.

OEM replacement is just a a rectangle with one corner to do the work. Looking at replacements, there seems to be many offerings for the "double corner" configuration.

Is there anything to the difference?

No one has an experienced opinion.

I use the chipper shredder quite a bit. It is a real boon to garden and orchard soil amendments, Mulch and composting.

I have one of the (probably smaller) tow around models, haven't worn out the first corner yet - my hammers sound like yours, just a rectangle with holes in both ends. gives 4 surfaces before replacement.

When mine finish wearing out, if replacements are reasonable I'll go with that - otherwise, my local steel supplier can plasma cut shapes for a little more than steel cost so I would have them cut from AR400 stock... Steve

I have a very old Troy bilt gas engine model, 8 hp, so likely a lot smaller than yours, but from the day when Troy Bilt was super heavy duty. It has the notched corners. Can't say how they compare with the single corner type, except to say that when they are relatively new, they really yank the stuff thru the shredder with a vengeance. They work very well, and last quite well, too. I am on my second set, first corner after about 22 years. I take an "all or none" approach to rotation and replacement, so some of the corners on the ones I replaced were still likely quite useable. It's enough work to take them off and put them on that I don't fool with picking and choosing. As they wear, the corner goes from notched to rounded, and I have sometimes thought it might extend their lives a bit to recut the corner on a grinding wheel when it starts to round out, but never tried it.

My own guess is that the notched corners present two corners to the material and so should theoretically work a little better than unnotched, but having no direct comparison, it's just a guess. There theoretically could be a reduction in rotational speed if the notched corners do work much better, and it might (again, just guessing) make a difference, especially if you are on the low end of the recommended hp. for the unit, but still just guessing.
