Removing wheel hub on JD 155C

I need to remove a front wheel for a tire repair. The cap protecting the hub is a flexible plastic, and should come off easily, but not for me. I have tried with hands, with channel lock pliers, and small pry bar. Nothing works. Can somebody give me the secret?

I use a lady slipper to get behind it and work plastic over the washer. Worse case cut it off with a utility knife. Caps are about seven bucks. Good luck.
