What can I use to remove all these pesky rocks from my yard and field? It seems like every rain brings 100 new ones to the surface and I'm getting tired of pulling them out by hand. Any really good attachment to use?
Thanks,
Rick

Glacial rocks? What size?

I have glacial rocks, and some are too big (car size) but many are the bushel basket size (on average). I used to dig them by hand and know that isn't the way one wants to do it for very long. I probably move out about 100 rocks on average every two years. They poke up and I have to do it again or risk hitting them with the mower deck.
I moved first to an old beam from a one-bottom horse drawn plow. Kept one handle on it, hooked a chain to it, and I would guide it down behind a rock with one of the boys driving the tractor. One gets some real thrills and jolts doing it this way, but rolled out a lot of rocks using that tool.
Then I picked up a 1-tooth sub-soiler for the 3pt. I could work my way down easier and grubbed a lot of rocks that way. Then use the bucket to roll them out, pick them up and bring top soil back to fill the hole.
Then, by accident, I found out my forks worked fantastic to dig them out, and often to even carry them away. I can point them straight down, work down around the rock and carefully pry them out. If close enough together, the rock cradles between them for moving to another location.

So, my No. 1 choice is the forks. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

If I had a backhoe, I'd probably use it for rocks.

(If you are talking smaller [1 -4" size] rocks, then a Harley Rake, or equivalent, works well for me, windrowing the rocks so they can be picked up with the bucket. There also are field rock pickers that might work for you, depending on the condition of the 'lawn').

I have the same problem. I should be a rock farmer, boy would I be a success....

Right now I use a 5 gallon bucket, one of those pick-up tools (so you don't have to bend over 1 million times) and my RTV.... Sure would like a better way!!!!!

Sorry on help from me just comfort in knowing some other poor sole is there with you /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If rocks were valuable, I'd be wealthy, I've got tons of them!!
I borrowed a root ripper which may be the same thing as a sub soiler. If it would get far enough under the rock, it would pull it to the surface and I loaded them into my FEL to haul to a rock pile at the back of the property. I had most of the rock below the surface but with all of the rain we've had, many more are cropping back up. I would bury them deeper but I think they would still come popping back up. Lots of work no matter how you do it.

Here's why they call where we live the Rocky Mountains; if geologists are correct, this is what you area will look like in 80 to 100 million years.

But, given the average lifespan, it's probably OK to continue to pick up and dispose of the rocks.

Sure wish I could remember what soil looks like! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The rocks I have are mostly 2" to about 2'. It's just so hard to plant grass in them. And, I swear they grow with the rain. Maybe if I get the pebbles out then they couldn't grow up.... What's a subsoiler? Any pictures?
Thanks,
Rick

Rick, go to the TSC webpage, I think there is a picture of a sub soiler in there. Look at the middle buster too, it might do bigger rocks.

Am I looking for a rock picker? I've been searching around the net and found a tool that looks promising but can't seem to find out how I could get one or what they cost.

There are commercial rock pickers out there but they will require a large tractor and probably be expensive.

I wonder if someone makes one for a small tractor. There has to be something I can use. Otherwise, I wil have to get off my tractor and pick them up by hand for hours and hours.... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I have purchased them from both Home Depot and Lowes. They sell them in Lawn & Garden to pick up trash. The one that works the best is a black plastic handle with a pistol grip, aluminum tube main stem and the clamp section has two suction cups on each side. It looks like it's for paper but I have picked up so many rocks I can tell you they work great. Pick-em up, in the 5 gal. bucket until you can't carry it, dump them in the RTV.... Start over again..... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Here is one for a skid steer.

I can't find a pic, but I have seen some that are for a 3pt, and there is a 'basket'-like scoop made of bars that won't let the larger rocks fall through. Dip it into the ground, and scoop up rocks. If sod, then probably some sod comes with the rocks. There are no moving parts like the above site shows.

I rented one of these several years ago and had pretty good luck with it. It won't handle the 12"+ rocks very well but collects the smaller ones very nicely.

That was three years ago and I have a whole new crop ready for harvest /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif it only collects them from the surface.

This is the type of rock picker I was thinking about.

Search the net. Lots of hits and lots of designs.

The problem is that all of these items pick rocks out of fresh turn dirt. We(I think this is what Rick means) need to get the out of an existing pasture. They just keep coming to the surface, more & more every year.

I don't know if their is anything you can do that won't tear up the grass, short of going back to the hand pickup process.........

I agree with that.

The ones I was talking about are bigger than the 'pick by hand' variety, and are pushed up by frost, not eroded up by rain and animal traffic. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

A type like a golf-ball picker might get some, but not being the same size, I doubt that too.

Get the bucket!

Hmmm....guess I'm going to have to figure out how to pick up rocks by hand without getting off my tractor.... I was thinking about something like a bucket for the FEL that is tines rather than solid.... Please don't tell my wife about this. She'll make me get off the tractor...
