Removing Sod

yes... BUT it helps if you have a tooth bar so you dig in instead of sliding over the top..

You will need to go back and clean up the edges with a landscape shovel though..

I have used the fel/tooth bar to extend some flower beds and it worked very well. Much better than how i originally did the flower beds by hand with a shovel..

good luck

Well, we are just planning long term (we don't even have the tractor yet), but were were thinking of using a PTO tiller. We want to remove the sod so we do not till under weeds. (this will be a small garden)

If there is a Rototiller available use that and don't waste good topsoil. Weeds can be handled with cultivation.:D

Figure out where you want the garden and get some glyphsote (roundup) and kill off the weeds and grass. Then till. Other option is to put down tarps and wait a few weeks till everything under them is dead, move tarp and till dead area. Keep doing this till you have the size the you want.

Just till.

You'll leave a depression if you remove the sod.

You'll take the best topsoil away.

It won't work real good to try just scooping the sod away. Real uneven results, depending on your soil type.

Weed seeds tend to be in 5-10 inches deep from 100's of years ago, so while you will take away a lot of seeds, there will still be plenty waiting for you.

I understand where you want to get to, but - don't think it will really work out well.

Just till it until it's dead.
