Hey all, i need to have a hydralic cylinder repaired on my 447 backhoe, the one that moves the boom side to side, bottom left if your looking at the hoe from behind the tractor. it looks like it shouldn't be hard to take off, just remove the pins and hydraulic lines. are there any hang ups i may encounter, any tricks i need to know about. i've worked on cars for years, but never tractors, trying to do all my stuff myself on this one. thanks again. oh, its leaking so i think the seals need replaced. any input would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Just make sure the bucket is on the ground to eliminate any swing movement that might cause you to be pinched.

Make sure the system is depressurized before you crack open any fittings.

You don't want to risk a hydraulic fluid injection injury like this picture that J_J posted in another safety thread.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
What they said. Since you are going to R/R it yourself, are you going to rebuild it yourself also?

I would suggest doing both cylinders while you have it apart.

Does your backhoe have a place to insert a pin to lock the boom straight? If it does this is the best way to go. Without seeing the blocking it would be hard to know whether the boom and its hinged mounting would stay in place with the cylinders removed for the swing. From a safety standpoint you need to be certain it will not fold up on you.

For safety's sake you may be better off to mount the hoe on the tractor and position the boom straight behind the tractor with the bucket on the ground.

You might need another person to help you remove the tension on the pins as you try and knock them out, plus another person is good in case of trouble.
