Re: Removing a \"roll pin\"

OK it is done.

Attempt number 1. I hammered it flush with one side so most of it was sticking out the other side. I took a good stout nail and flattened the point. I used the head against the roll pin, the flattened point was facing away for me to hammer onto. It promptly bent 90 degrees.

Attempt number 2. Same result, except I hit my finger with the hammer.

Attempt number 3. Larger nail, much larger. Cut off the point and with the newly flat end pressed against the roll pin I wacked at it with my hammer. I should have been wearing heavy gloves, see Attempt number 2. This time there were a few swear words, but they were pain induced, not out of frustration.

Attempt number 4. I took a pair a wire snips and gingerly squeezed into the roll pin and rocked it. It took some time, but it acually pulled out.

Precisely the way I've done it, several times, Bob, before I got the right kind of punches. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Re: Removing a \"roll pin\"

Well I don't have the punches so if I ever have to do it again I will first try the "Bird" method!

Thanks. And by the way, rocking the pins out hurt a lot less than hitting my fingers with the hammer /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Re: Removing a \"roll pin\"

I run a small gunsmithing business on the side. A number of years ago I purchased a special set of roll pin punches from Brownells after being frustrated many times using a straight pin punch. The roll pin punch has a dimpled end that fits into the opening of the roll pin. This arrangement does not flatten the pin thus making it reusable and easier to get out.

I don't have the latest catalog handy right now but I know they are not very expensive.

Re: Removing a \"roll pin\"

Brownells sells them for $3.60 each, or a set of 8 including "bench box" $35.50

Re: Removing a \"roll pin\"

The secret to tapping them out is to use the blunt nose punch so that you don't expand them. I also 1st give them a shot of PB Blaster and they slide out easier.

A little late with that advice Mike! I didn't even think about using a lubricant /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Re: Removing a \"roll pin\"

Bob I only added the late post because a lot of folks read these posts for their own reference. They might also have the need to remove a pin or two at sometime in the future. And after all information is "free" here at the TBN site.

Hope you had a good 4th!
