Reminder - Cost of Ownership of Gas vs Diesel

/ Reminder - Cost of Ownership of Gas vs Diesel #21
I just hauled 10,000lbs of hay with my Duramax. I got 14 mpg. I use to haul about 8,000lbs of hay with my 3/4 ton gasser. 7mpg. I couldn't afford to haul hay with a gas truck!

Really? How about the $9,000 you spent up front?

Don't take this personal. I have owned 4 diesel trucks and still have a F350 but never again. Well can't say never, maybe a Cummins powered Nissan.

I guess people just didn't read the article or want to understand facts. One of the points was you pay more upfront but get some of it back on trade in or resale.

Here in the NW diesel was 80 cents a gallon more than gas yesterday, what the heck is going on with fuel prices? Gas is dropping like a rock but diesel isn't budging.

I read the article. The fact is diesel trucks sell at a premium new and used but unless you tow day in and day out or just flat want a diesel it will never pay for its self. Tried it 4 times and bet 70% of my 120,000 miles on my current one is towing. The gasers have just gotten too good.

It's $1.07 gallon difference here. $2.72 for gas and $3.79 for diesel.

So what exactly are you saying DP. The University of Michigan was paid off by the diesel industry to make up a report? They are bad at math? You have tracked your exact costs down to the nearest penny?

I would say you and a lot of other people have a vague idea, based on seat of the pants experience that diesels cost more to operate. Your opinion isn't based on facts. Yes diesel fuel costs more, but they took that into account. They did research, crunched some numbers and published the results. Could there be a flaw in their study? I'm sure there could be but it isn't based on will guesses and vague ideas like most people opinions.

Trucks equipped with the V10 or GM 8.1 always sell fast when they come up for sale around here. I'm talking within a couple of days after it gets the "for sale" sign slapped on it. My mechanic has a 2001 Silverado dually with the 8.1 and ONLY 22,000 miles on it and he's been offered numerous times what the truck stickered for back when he bought it.

DP, I got on the internet and looked up fuel price in your area of Indiana. I got 2.69 for regular gas, 3.42 for diesel. That's not $1.07, that's more like $0.73. In my area it more like $0.64 today.

Here is the link I used to come up with those prices. Indiana Gas Prices - Find Cheap Gas Prices in Indiana, IN

I'm saying it not a winning proposition. I unless you just want one or tow every day every mile it's not worth it.

I have been lucky and have had good reliability out of my diesel trucks but I'm dreading the $6500 repair or more.

For that matter my gas trucks have been just as reliable.

I track every dime spent. Fuel, oil, filters, tires, ect. Gas trucks cost 2/3 the cost to drive vs a diesel. But what do I know, I only have 450,000 miles behind a diesel truck and 3 times that amount behind a gas one of all 5 manufacturers.

Why don't you pop up a spread sheet and show us your numbers? Not doubting your numbers, it would just be nice to see them.
