Can I register a tractor for on road use? I would like to travel short distances between jobs and it would save me some if I could just drive down the road. The tractor would be capable of 25-30mph..

I am not under "farm" status if that makes a difference.

Many states just require you to have a SMV sign and flashers.

Varies by state and as you didn't mention which state you are in.....

Call the local DMV or better, the state highway patrol office. Even better is to drop by around 08:00 with a box of donuts and ask. They are the ones that will be issuing the ticket.

(I've had problems with DMV giving 100% wrong information so I don't trust them as reliable .)

Not sure about anywhere else.. But where I live in NC- there is a guy that all he drives is his tractor. I saw him the other day with a carry all on the 3PH with groceries.....

He has the slow moving sign and is often seen pulling a trailer with his lawn cutting implements..Part time job maybe?

Now he is "semi-retired" so I don't know all the details..

but everyone accepts it--

next thought--
also in my area, I am more worried about the game wardens than the state / county folks.. I live off a gravel secondary road, and was once given grief by the game warden for not wearing my seat belt on the tractor-- uh the book says if the ROPS is folded down-- I eventually won that argument when I offered to take him to the house to see the book. and there was something about the book had to be right since it mentioned US Transportation safety board regulations.

anyway---I sold that Hammock in the yard, but I am still sticking to my story..

I'd say he was stepping out side his jurisdiction on that one.

well, after some research due to 9/11-- he has as much authority as a trooper.. but they are on power trips-- at least the young ones that failed the cut to be real cops..

In Maine, if you are traveling farm to farm, farm to field or anything to do with ag, your ok.

If your out riding or using it commercially technically you need to register it. I was pulled over by a trooper while on my tractor and got a bunch of grief. He said I couldn't be on the pavement, I told him I was traveling farm to farm and he was welcome to write me up. He took off in a huff. I registered the tractor as I use it for both farm and commercial, now they can't say boo.

If your on an ATV trail, technically you are atving and need to reg it as an atv. If you use it on a snowmobile trail to groom then you need to reg as a snowmobile. That's the rules for Maine, results may vary elsewhere.

I registered my tractor here in NH and all I did was go to the local town hall and explain that I wanted to drive my tractor a few miles down the road. They asked for the make, model, and weight of the tractor and then for just $62, they handed me a plate and I was on my way. No inspection necessary, it just needs to be re-registered every year like a car. I don't own a farm and am not limited to travel, it's a CE (construction equipment) plate.

I've never asked an LEO, but live in an area surrounded by both state police and county sheriffs, and have had several pass me when I've been on the road going to a neighbor's house. I do have the SMV sign on the rear and my flashers going, and have never had any problems.

I do try to keep as far to the right as I could, and be mindful if there are cars behind me.

Some places getting a plate can be an advantage from the money standpoint. (insert standard disclaimer here) I was told that if the tractor was used for commercial uses, then it has to either be plated or personal property tax paid. Ag on your own property seems to be exempt eitherway.
