What is the benefit of a sickle mower? When would you want one vs a rotary mower?

In addition to what Builder said, We just finished mowing under our 300+ acres of various fences with a mower just like this one. Sure beats weed eating. I have customers out west that use them in the Vineyards to set at 90 degrees vertical and trim the grape vines and trees limbs in the groves. Fruit and nut growers are using to cut under the tree limbs to make it clear for the workers to harvest the crop from the ground and see the Rattlers before he sees them. In addition, a 30 HP tractor can handle a 7 ft sickle and not a 7 ft Brush hog/Rotary type mower. Takes very little PTO power to run a sickle mower. Ken Sweet

I have a JD model 39 seven foot sickle mower. I use mine for cutting hay. It cuts the hay about 3 inches from the ground and lays it into windrows. I only have 15.5 acres so it does the job real well for me. The disc type mowers put way too much dirt in the hay and as I feed it to horses it's not good for them. I take the outer shoe off and then I can go under the fence lines.....yup sure beats weedeater :thumbsup:

Being an older one, it doesn't have the ability to go to 90 degrees like the newer ones do, but it's doing a great job for me.

Sweet you and your fellows do really nice work on rebuilding. What's your painting process, do you sand blast or wire wheel? Paint the whole thing at once or individual piece parts?

IMHO, That 39 JD is one of the better pitman mowers sold, although, It can be a little aggravating to get hooked up. In preparing a mower to sell like these, we do some of all that you mention except want to keep sand away from the wobble box drive, In addition, a little Easy Off oven cleaner and pressure washer works great for prep work. I just bought a Frontier SB1107 sickle with factory hyd lift. It fits a quick hitch and mows great.

Yes it was up around 4K...Lot of money for a mower but I couldnt justify even more money for a disc mower.
