Any idea why a Red Tail Hawk would starting schreeching constantly. We have them around here often, but they are usually quiet. They are cool to watch!

But, we have one that just started screetching all the time for the last couple of days. I'm guessing either it lost it's mate, or something is endangering it's nest. It moves around, which make me suspect it is not something going on with the nest.

Anu idea's?

RobertN,

I have a pair the has a nest near my property. I hear them
in the spring and I'm pretty sure I saw them mating one day.
Lots of screeching during the courtship. Usually they are
quite. On the other hand it seems like one of them was
really noisey last summer. I know I was working one area
that I was in last summer and one of the the hawks just
would NOT shut up. It really was annoying. Maybe the young
have been kicked out of the nest and miss mommy and daddy?

Good Question...

They have been screeching for the last 5 days or so. Right now it is quiet, but a it was going for a good 1/2 hour before I took my son to school. Yesterday, they just kept doing it all day.

The odd thing though, if the nest is threatened, is they do move around. They are not just sitting in one tree.

I have a mom and her young flying over my place all the time. They screech all the time while they are flying. I think thery are trying to stay in contact. Sometimes the father also flys whith them, but he is very high in the sky, while the mom and young fly low. Maye they are teaching the young how to hunt?

Maybe the young ones are demanding attention from the folks /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif. Or, like others have said, maybe there is something near the nest that is making them upset. Maybe a snake in the tree, maybe a bigger bird or an owl near. It would be cool to video tape it if you could. At least to get the sound on tape.

I saw them today. One was in a tree just 50' from the house. I snuck into the house and grabbed the camera, tossing the 80-200/2.8 on it. I wish it was at least a 300mm, maybe with a 1.6 in behind it. Even though I was pretty close, they did not appear very big in the view finder. I will try to get the film developed in the next couple days so I can scan it in.

The bird that was screeching seemed to be more light gray on the front, with some black highlites. It did all the screeching. The other one, in a second tree, seemed to be rusty red on the front. It stayed quiet till it flew away. All this time, I could hear another one screeching, seeming about 200-300' away.

I'm going to search the web later this evening, and see if I can discover anything really cool!

Robert,
I have one screeching at my place also, for the second summer in a row. I have assumed that it was to mark their territory around a nest, warning other birds off.
I'd be interested in what you learn.

We have what I assume is a screech owl that starts at dusk and ends at dawn. Dang annoying even with the windows shut. It has been going on for the past 3 weeks every night.

But, last spring we had a pair of Turkeys and a cock pheasant hanging around. Kind of cool for awhile but got annoying after awhile because the Tom Turkey decided to roost every night on the railing on our upper deck. Every morning at the crack of Dawn he gobbled constantly until we would chase him away. And the crap.... if the wind was coming out of the west he crapped on the deck all night. If it was out of the east he just crapped in the flower bed below.... We finally chassed him away with a water super soaker. We still hear him from time to time. Some Old Lady on the next hill adapted him........ The hen and the pheasant became road kill. Tom

:duh: I experienced the same thing for 3 straight weeks in late August thru early September in Oregon City, Or. from dusk till dawn with no break at all, a Red Tail Hawk was screeching and it moved around as well and even though I am an avid bird lover it got to the point were my nerves were worn thin and I avioded going outside during this time to avoid it hearing and slept with the windows closed.. I have searched online for over and over and have yet to find an actual reason for this behavior. Although I have gotten some great theriories. So PLEASE if anyone knows the ACTUAL answer please please let me know. [/QUOTE]

We'll get a screeching young crow every late summer- young one wanting attention. Also sometimes the adult will go around calling out warnings when a young one has left the nest.

This is only a *** 15 *** year old thread! :laughing::laughing::laughing:

We still have a mating pair of Red Tails that screech all of the time. I kinda like it. :D

We have never found the nest but I THINK I know the general area where the nest is located. The pair on our place COULD be the same set we saw when we bought the land since the birds can live 20+ years. Guess I need to ask their birthdays. :D

At the end of the summer we noticed one of the "yearlings" hunting frequently in our front yard. Seems like it was mostly getting bugs but maybe a mouse every once in a while. They usually get tree rats and rabbits but one year we saw a wounded crow that had been hit by a hawk. The rest of the murder was trying to protect the wounded crow but the hawk was sitting in a tree, bidding it's time, and swooping in from time to time to see if it could move things along so to speak. This young hawk has made a go at the crows several times that we have seen but with not luck.

At my job I kept hearing sea gulls... over and over. But I'd never see them. I asked a few people if there were sea gulls around. Nope. Finally, I found a young Ferruginous Hawk and its parents. First ones I'd ever seen. Man, they make noise all-day-long!

A couple years back I heard a handful of seagulls, but I live inland. Then I heard a car alarm, a redwing blackbird, a cardinal, and back to the seagulls. Yep, mockingbird, saw him up on the roof peak.

We had one that would mimic the whine of our dog wanting to be let in, which is a little disconcerting when he is already sitting next to you on the couch.

Well after 15 years one of the original posters should have given a answer on the screeching by now i have wondered on how often the screeching is trying to scare rabbits or such and make em move around out of hiding.

I agree that the screeching is used to get pray animals to move. While Hawks have good eye sight, seeing a brown bunny frozen still among the leave litter would be very difficult. But if that little bunny moves...

I watch the hawks, well, like a hawk, :D:D:D and sometimes they are screeching during breeding season, other times they seem to be establishing territory with other hawks, simply talking to each other, and then they seem to be trying to get something to move.

Now, seeing owls is really interesting. Those danged birds make no sound when hunting. SCARY they is and I am not a tree rat. We have an owl nest right near the house and I have seen the hunting. Skippy Squirrel does not have much of a chance against an owl at dusk. Owl says, :licking:.:laughing::laughing:

OP here - they eventually stopped. But they did it again the next year. It seemed seasonal; maybe mating...
