Yanmar does not rebuild tractors. Tractors that are not in good shape are taken somewhere and have something done. Some are rebuilt in Vietnam with quality that has been discussed quite a bit in other threads. Others are bought by dealers and "rebuilt" this can mean anything from a cosmetic jobs to a quality rebuild.

If you could buy a tractor reconditioned from Yanmar, then you could trust it. Yanmar does not recondition tractors. Some people take worn out tractors and ship them to a "factory" in Vietnam and recondition them. They then call them "factory" reconditioned. Very misleading.
I'm not condemning all Vietnamese recons, but I am condemning those that misrepresent the product.

I'm not going to condemn all Vietnamese "remanufactured" tractors or "dealers", but in the past month I have been contacted for parts by people that have really gotten the shaft. Engines that lock up after an hour of use, , Ring & pinion gears that are no longer available , & then "dealers" that won't honor their 90 warranty. I feel that advertising a 20-30 year old tractor as new with 0 hours just because it has a new paint job & tires is pretty close to fraud . At the least it is very unethical. There were enough questionable or unknowledgeable "dealers" dealing with greys in the past to give greys a bad name. The Junk to Viet Nam to US program has helped lower our reputation even further.

Without tearing into the engine or gearboxes, is it possible to tell a high quality reconditioning from a low quality one?

A Yanmar with 1000 hrs on it, that has had a complete service.oil ,lube, antifreeze and had a dealer with good experience check out the drive line, has probably 4000 hours left on it. Why would anyone "rebuild" a tractor like that unless it was junk. There are way too many of the good used ones out there to even think about risking a "rebuilt". My two cents worth.

As usual you are getting good advice here already from the pros that are wise, honest, and helpful. Now for my simple two cents worth also /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif--is to drive before you buy from a person who has had the tractor a while. Drive it with an implement to make it work hard and see how it performs. Most greys have about 500 to 100 hours on them and if cared for will last a long time.
The other option is too buy from a reputable dealer (many on this sight) but I still think you need to get on that tractor and make sure the "fit and feel" is good for you.
And yes, lemon's do happen but generally these are VERY solid tractors. Hapily they are alos easy to work on.....just in case!

I have one of the so called rebuilt tractors. So far it has been pretty good but it's obvious to me (now) that it is not as good a tractor as an "A" condition used tractor would be. The fresh green paint hides a lot and it's difficult to tell what has been rebuilt, replaced or repainted. I would not go the rebuilt route again for my own use. Good luck in your decision. Darrell

The biggest giveaway of a dubious condition tractor is the manner in which it is painted.. Look for auction paint job signs... belts painted, decals painted over.. engine # plates painted.. hoses painted.. etc. A person doing a quality job on a tractor is going to take the time to mask off areas that dont get paint.. that includes belts. Heck.. if it is a rebuilt.. the chassie should be repainted before it even gets a belt.. etc.
Also look for telltale 'rtv' or forma-gasket squeezed out of a seam / joint.. that tells you that area has been apart.
For that fact.. look at all the gasket seams.. if it has had a full rebuild.. it will have new gaskets..
Kinda like vehicles at auctions.. you pop the hood and see a new AC compressor.. but not a new accumulator or dryer.. that was a fast 'out-the-door' job to get cold ac.. when they really should have replaced the other components in the system.. etc.
Like the othrs said.. when you see a yanmar advertised as low hours.. keep in mind that that 3 digit hourmeter is showing low hours probably after 1000, etc.. ( though it is possible in rare circumstances to fine real low hours machines).. And like the othrs said.. unless it was worn slap out.. why would a diesel tractor eed a rebuild so soon.. some refurbishments to make saleable.. yes..rebuild? no.
See it start up when cold... let it run.. look for leaks where it has been sitting... look for other evidence that suports or disputes the owner/dealers claims of repairs..

thanks for all the information. I'm working on a very limited budget of a few thousand dollars and have 2 choices, either the Yanmar reconditioned from a pretty trustworthy person or a 1969 massey ferguson 35, from a relative that has it in his basement, both for about the same.
