I hear you Crazyal my mother had stocks passed down from her father in the 1940's that were worth a small fortune now there not worth the paper they are printed on. She is an older lady and did not believe that what happed could happen and refused to sell them for peanuts.

That is a sad story and worse yet it happened to many that can never recover.

That is a problem anyone could face with money invested in the stock market.

I am sorry to hear about your mothers bad fortune.

Thanks she's good all her eggs were not in one basket as they say ;) but the stock certificates might look good if I frame them one day..lol

Yes she was lucky that she is financially in good shape but she wanted to save them to pass down to her grandkids. That's the stock market I guess but the new company should have done something for all those that had shares that became worthless.

Not sure why you went through that...I financed with Ally (re-badged GMAC) and provided nothing...Was approved in less than 15 seconds by 3 other banks. Took Ally becuse they had an additional $2500 rebate.

To those who say the banks took the money...Keep in mind that the "bailout" money (that many banks were forced to take even though they didn't want it) was paid back with interest as soon as the gubmnet "allowed" them to repay. The government made a profit on that loaned money..It was not a gift, even though the media would like everyone to believe otherwise as it makes a nice populist story.
I just wish that more people actually understood what you posted.

90% don't have a clue as to what is going on.

Really? Then post 'half' of what you know about GM and taxpayer bailouts... I don't drive GM, but simply because I prefer a different manufacturer's product, because it works for me... Not because I need a cause to get behind.

Here is just one thing you didn't know:

Before the bailout............50% of GM's workforce was sitting at home, watching tv, and collecting 80% of their salary and full benefits.

Why.............Because it was in the union contract.

If a worker was laid off, he had a choice whether to be transferred to another factory or not.............if he chose not..........he was paid to stay at home.

Someone mentioned welfare in an earlier post, this was clearly welfare..........us taxpayers paid for it!

As was said earlier............management had a lot to do with this kind of stuff............

But most people don't relize just how powerful these unions have become either.

The unions seen to sit in the background, but if you investigate a little........you find they are up front and in your face...........Hello Wall Street Occupation.

Shareholders own a corporation. Me and Warren Buffet could own one of the "foreign" auto companies tomorrow. All we have to do if become majority stock holders. Since my buddy Warren and I are Americans, would that then make Subaru or Honda an American company? Let us know which one you'd like us to buy and I'll text WB this afternoon.

If some Italian outfit gathered up enough money and bought, oh, say Chrysler, would that make Chrysler an Italian company? Just askin'.

So, if a Saudi prince bought up GM stock and became the major stock holder, would that make it a Saudi company?

Good thing we have good old GE, a red, white and blue American company. I always buy GE to "keep the profits here". Oh wait, they don't pay their corporate taxes here, OK, bad example.

Satirically yours,

Have a great day, guys.
It's my understanding, that due to an agreement with this administration, that they didn't need to pay the 3 billion in taxes that they owe the US government, because they said the words 'green energy'

Or did the CEO's just put kneepads on? I had to ask that question because there have been 2 men turn up dead after claiming to have had sexual relations with Obama.

I am trying to keep my opinion to myself but I have read all the posts on this thread carefully, and I really don't think anyone has just posted rants without thinking about how they feel about this particular issue.

I noticed it was 8 pages before anyone said that unions deserve some of the blame.

I did not see anyone mention that the skyrocketing cost of health care, and the fact that retirees are living a lot longer now than they were expected to, has made workers at many companies and government agencies (especially at fire and police departments, school systems, etc.) who already retired cost more than the ones who are still working.

This is a very complicated subject and it's a bigger problem than one auto company. Just my $0.02.

Before I start this I want to say I'll be as unbiased as possible, I'm usually pretty level headed but my mom has worked for gm for the last million years! Not on the line but as an engineer in control over the design of most of the interior of all gm vehicles. The management has been poor and they've been unable to produce results over the last years. and I do strongly agree that unions are hurting this situation greatly. Don't get me wrong, the idea of the original union was a good thing, but it's been government control to dissolve unions or create them into over powered industry. When a union was first formed government abolished it by sending in the military, now the government gives all regulating power to the unions. My problem is not gm or the union but this government that is trying to do way to much and failing at everything where if it where in the hands of the people they could bargain, they bailout would've either never happened or a bank would've taken the risk and won big. We need to take all this control out of the government where they just spend our money on things that are guaranteed to fail. Private industry has the motive that government doesn't because it's their lively hoods at risk. If they screw something up they get screwed. If the government screws something up for the the people they just raise taxes and screw the people twice. We need to put the control into the hand of people that actually have something at stake because their a lot less likely to make super stupid decisions.

What I'm saying is I too don't think their should've been a bailout but we also aren't doing anyone any favors by not supporting our vehicles made here in America and saying you won't buy a gm vehicle isnt helping anyone because we'd be likely to get screwed over again because of all the money the government would loose in stocks. It just makes no sense. Shouldnt have happened in the first place but were just hurting ourselves not buying American.
