Having lived through so many bans/scares/panics I'd figure out what you think you use in a year, add 10% and multiply that by four years. So if you use 50 rounds a year, that's ~220 rounds.
Not a bad baseline...

Bear Bangers and Launchers

Scare cartridges (bangers, flares and whistling screamers) are practical, inexpensive, easy-to-use and very effective bear deterrents. They can be fired from pen launchers or pistols. Both systems are highly effective, so the system you choose is simply a matter of personal choice.
Where can we buy those bangers & launchers?

I shopped for some for a shotgun, pistol and revolver but no body stocked them.

As a added bonus, after inquiring about them, the shop keepers looked at me in judgment as if I was some kind of weirdo. They wanted to know why I wanted them.

Would you really shoot a bear with a pellet gun? I am by no means a bear expert, but that would seem to just make the bear unhappy.
probably not :), the bear banger worked and the dog is on point
due to the local wildfires, the flare bangers were restricted
the banger was louder than any shotgun I've heard or fired

zero, zero and zero rounds. The odds of an armed break-in are less than 1 percent. Most armed invasions are are committed by someone the owner knows and usually happen during the day when no one is home.

if by chance your house is chosen and gun play happens, it will be over in seconds. If by chance you have a gun in your hands when it happens, pray it isn't plain clothed cops with the wrong address.
There does seem to be an uptick where I live with almost daily reports of home and business armed intruders.

Here is one from the neighborhood that went National.

Apparently everybody had blanks in their guns since no one was injured.

Minimums? A box of each. We don't have as much as many here. 9mm and 380 (his and hers), 22lr for varmints, 22-250, for somewhat bigger varmints, 2 X 12g, .177 pellet for city varmints. Shotguns and sidearms are for home defense. I keep a vest loaded with spares. Easy to grab and slip on.

Like many said above, you really need more for practice and the 'what if'. Strictly for the break-in? A box or less.

I saw the bullets holes...

Wild shooting in the dark... granny only got off one shot... The perps shot wildly.

Many thugs have zero marksman skills... at least here.

Video seldom ever shows a shootout... mostly when being shot at the perps flee...

General home defense. Break-ins or more.

How many rounds of ammo are people having in reserve at home right now today.
I know a guy with 3500 rounds of 7.62, 3500 rounds of 5.56 and 1500 rounds of 9mm. Has two firearms of each caliber.

Probably just in case of another season of peaceful yet fiery protests and anarchy when people get offended.

A couple thousand each of 7.62 Nato, 5.56 Nato, and 45 acp the rifle ammo is mostly MEN (German) with some IMI (Isreali) thrown in the mix. Both sources are high quality, Nato spec ammo that's surprisingly accurate and very clean burning. Anywhere from 50 to 100 each of various hunting rifles. Usually a couple hundred each for my target rifles. With enough components on hand to at least match the same quantities in future reloads.

Not planning on any wars. But I do see the day, maybe by my grandkid's time, where ammo is much more difficult to obtain. Not much use to hand down all my guns to them, if there's not ammo and "makings" to go along with them.

Thugs have no skills is for sure.
There was a shoot out one house down from our home when we lived in Arizona. Gang bangers left hundreds of casing on the street and were able to hit houses and cars. Pretty sure the shots that hit houses and cars were strays.

But the point being they do not have enough proficiency to hit the target they aim at. Probably making them more dangerous to innocent bystanders than who they are after.
Nothing is more emotional than waking up in the middle of the night in a safe area and the war zone sounds like it got to close for comfort.

Lots of good insight in this post.
Right now sitting on 1000 rounds of .223 and 500 rounds of 9mm. I think that is adequate, but more would be better. Half of that is reserved for practice and the other half is reserved for the end of times. Which is why I think more is better. After the last ammo shortage I am leery of ever letting my stockpile get lower than what I have today. The last shortage has taught me that ammo can dry up in an instant. After which there is no guarantee it will ever be easy to get again. Right now ammo is cheap, BUY IT UP!

Yep... sometimes they get the wrong house... twice in 30 years rentals have been shot up... on one the shot gun blasts to the front were suppose to be one block over... same address and same style home... went on TV need for that one... the mother and daughter called 911 from the bathtub.

Another was a disgruntled boyfriend who emptied clips just shooting... several hit a home I manage...

People hit by stray bullets are a fact every year... often the worst is blindly shooting between moving cars...

Shot spotter helps but lack the numbers of officers to fully respond...

Yeah and now thugs have Glocks with a "switch" which basically makes them a full auto firearm. Can you imagine shooting a 17 or 30 round mag at full auto through a handgun? Who knows where half of the rounds will go. If you watch a video of them shooting a 30 round mag through one of those it takes like 2-3 seconds at most. Scary!!

Ok, level 2 question.

I have 1 shotgun, 1 rifle and 1 handgun. How many rounds of ammo for each should I have on hand for home defense? And “as many as I can afford” is not a valid answer.
Just remember they are all as useless as a hammer for self defense without ammo.

can be effective or he can not give a **** about it, it depends on his previous exposure to it... just like rubber bullets if they have got shot a few time with them they don't leave the way you think they would... so always best to have a real one behind the rubber one.
