Two other stories to add.
First - In '57 we moved to FL it was pretty wild and woolly back then. My stepdad bought a 5 acre parcel backing into RR. A local "surveyor" marked it off and there was a weird quarter acre house lot, separate, at the front road - was right in the middle. Come to find out, 5 years or so further on (at our expense) that the lot was actually the front SE _corner_.
Second story. Wife an I bought 2 lots, 6 acres total, against an old RR, now a rail trail. Neighbor to the south showed me the concrete monuments his father.put in so (long story short) I fenced TWO feet in off property line. Neighbor proceeds to fence up to ours effectively stealing 2x100 feet of our land.
Ugh again.

You could have nipped that one right in the bud; hire a surveyor to establish where the corners are, then ask them to move their fence. Of course there would be a price involved...

The neighbor's father was a registered and certified surveyor and the corners were all marked with obvious concrete monuments. On top of which the fence was installed while we were on vacation. Then he (neighbor) died and we were dealing with a window who was into Alshiemers. The deck was stacked.

Another thread where the neighbor being complained about may not be the bigger problem.

We and 3 neighbors are in a dispute with an uphill neighbor who wont clean his water ditch right now. Its incredible how our properties collect water now. At little cost to him, he could clean ditch and we would have less water problems. Instead, he is complaining that we didn稚 ask him nicely, so he won稚 clean it.

Water is a special issue with me. Both from an abutting properties. One neighbor did work on his property that now ends up flooding part of ours, the other neighbor continues to run his off-road vehicles through creeks.

Neither respect the property of others, and there is no talking with them.

A tree falling is a lot more of your or my fault than water. We can spot problem trees and deal with them. We can稚 change that water falls from the sky and runs down hill.

Ahh, but if you influence the water and how/where it goes, you could be in the wrong.

I suppose that I am "territorial". I paid for my property, I pay the taxes on it, and I reckon it's mine. I want to be a good neighbor and do what I can to help my neighbors out when they need it, but those property lines are important to me.

I feel the same way. I want every inch that is mine, yet not one micron of what's yours. Not everybody is going to think the same but I try to get along with my neighbors whether we see eye to eye or not.

So far I've succeeded, but have only lived here about 17 years.

It's not always about good vs bad people. Often just conflicting values and belief systems. My other new neighbor seems to be a nice guy. Problem is, we enjoy the wild turkeys and deere like they are our pets. He wants to shoot them for FUN!
