Raising Cows for personnel consumption

There is another downside to be prepared for when you raise your own or have someone do it for you, is that its hard to eat store bought beef after youve had quality beef. I had never noticed how much smell store bought hamburger had.
You cant go back.

That痴 where I知 at. Started raising my own about 20 years ago and have to continue raising my own now.

How easy was it to keep the goats fenced in? I've always heard that they're the ultimate "Houdini"

I learned that with our first goat. The next pens were built with second hand, 6 foot chain link. No problems after that (when I installed a bottom wire).

Alldodge.

In this area 3 acres of good mixed grasses will carry a cow/calf pair all year. 2 acres to graze. 1 for hay. It won’t be cheap to get started but once you get going overhead cost stop eating your lunch and around here you can raise beef fairly cost effective. Once you start eating your own beef you’ll order chicken or a salad when you go out to eat. We haven’t bought beef in the 13 years we’ve been married. I raise my own.

Pm me any questions you have. I can walk you through the local area. Your in south central KY. What county? I’m in southern Ohio County. Your not that far away. I sell all my calves at auction in Glasgow.

Cows are a lot of work, really expensive to feed thru the winter in the N.E., plus they become "pets"
I will feel bad when our big steer gets slaughtered.

But home grown is sure tasty.
Plus you appreciate and understand where your meal comes from.

Appreciate the input, and as before I have a lot of thinking to do, just trying to find out what it will take. Will need to do several things before getting them. I'm so soft hearted I'm sure it will bother me when its time. I like hunting, and sometimes I still feel bad after pulling the trigger.

We picked up the house and 24 acres 3 years ago and have been renting out the house. Planning this year to do a VRBO instead of yearly rental. The vacation is also taking some research as to do's and don'ts.

I've enjoyed the thread since I'm in research mode. Luckily for me I have 3 neighbors on my 1.5 mile street with cows. The neighbor next to me I plan to ask about a partnership. I'm thinking he might like having and extra set of hands and a field to hay or rotate with. I've got more land than he does but he has the pond.
