Well, the rain is gone. Didn't need an ark, but I'm going to get some seat time on my roads tomorrow after it dries a little.

The good part is the pretty view of the snow on the mountains. The peak in the middle is at about 11,000 and yes that's an extinct volcano in the foreground.

Will the Mojave now bloom, or is it too late in the season for that? Desert rains can bring remarkable vegetation, depending on the conditions.

We've already had temperatures down to 24, so no blooms until spring. The desert wild flower season is totally unpredictable, but certainly more likely after a wet winter.

The Joshua Trees are a different story. From my experience they sometimes bloom the second year after a wet year. However, some will only bloom every 10 or 20 or more years.

The are a strange tree, if you want to call them a tree, as a new branch is only formed from the bloom site. That means if a tree has 10 or 20 branches it's probably hundreds of years old. They are said to live up to 1,000 years.

I have some pictures of the Mojave Desert from a few years ago where about the only things sticking up in the desert are Joshua trees and wind generators. Earlier this year when my wife and I drove through the desert, I pointed out the Joshua trees to her, and we both agreed they didn't really look much like trees, but they were the tallest vegetation around.
