I thought that probably wasn’t important on my truck after got done changing a water pump. Nope, it overheated within a few miles.

Anybody remember the first generation flathead Fords? The distributor was below and behind the fan. Setting timing could be brutal.

I think 9N's were like this too.

So is my 49 8n BUT same as a 2n and 9n, the timing is set on the bench w the distributor removed from the tractor so not so brutal

A few of my timing lights show the fan marks. Some models of car are near impossible. Seen a few guys lift the car and take the front wheel off the front wheel drive land yachts. First of the Taurus I believe. Crazy.........

Thanks for the responses - I guessed that the shroud might be necessary, but wanted to be sure.

In cold weather startup, the shroud also acts as a pre-heating conditioner grabbing warm air off the engine thru the radiator to turn the slush anti-freeze back to a full liquid. It could help you in TX as the ice-age moved in there this year. :p

When i was an apprentice mechanic over 40 years ago, I left the fan shroud off the company's delivery van as it was a huge pain to get on and off and I was the only person servicing the thing regularly. The delivery driver couldn't complete his rounds the next morning cos the thing was overheating. I got a well-deserved reaming but learned why the shroud is there.
