First of all, it isn't my goal to trash the environment. I did intentionally buy a used tractor that doesn't have the Final Tier IV equipment. There may come a time when emissions will be controlled without sacrificing reliability or incurring ongoing maintenance costs. We're close, but not at that point today. The nearest hope is DOC. My OPINIONS are based on what I've read and understand:
* Unless you're in a third world country with high sulfur diesel, the DOC will last as long as the tractor and without maintenance.
* The DOC itself, and not the engine will run hot, like the cat on your car.
* Even though many owners report no problems with regen, many others do. Why chance it if you don't need to?
* DPF's eventually need to be cleaned or replaced.
I did consider new tractors the last time. Mahindra was a front runner, but the cabs were too small. The Massey dealer told me in 2018 they would be coming out with similar mCRD engines soon. Not sure where that stands. Not knowing if the Kubota
B3350's legendary emission system issues were specific to that tractor or something that may later emerge on other tractors was one of many things considered.
