What size socket do you require to remove the blades on a MX5? I have a 1 5/16"and it is too small.

It is a 1 inch bolt. So, it should have a 1.5 inch head if it is a standard nut (which it looks like it is).

Thanks for the information. I had to order the socket, no one carries that size in stock.

You might want to pick up a torque multiplier also... The nut has to be torqued to 627 ft/lb.
I need to get one myself. I bought a MX6 a couple months back, but haven't had to do any maintenance yet. Let us know how the procedure goes.

I gave up on trying to hold and torque to 600 plus pounds. I use a heavy duty three quarters inch drive air impact wrench, a metric socket and hammer away.

I gave up and went to the dealer, they only charge $30 to do the blades. The place that I ordered the socket cancelled my order, out of stock. I couldn't find a place to rent a torque multiplier and I didn't want to pay the big price for a 3/4 inch drive on line.

While at the dealer they are going to check the slip clutch, it has been sitting for a long time without use, according the guy I bought the MX5 from.

Last time my wife had a set changed out we let the dealer right up the road do it. Charged $30 or $40 labor I think, it was worth on the Bush Hog SQ720.

Hey,

Newbie question here. I have a JD 3520 and an MX5 mower. I understand the wisdom of taking the mower in for service but my dealer is far enough away and, well, ok, I admit, while I DO own a torque multiplier and large sockets, I don't own a decent flatbed trailer .... So, I would like to do the blades myself this weekend. What I don't know is the best method for lifting the mower for service. Anyone have a preferred technique? Max height on the 3ph (with blocks of course) is still pretty low, I would love to stand that sucker up and work on it at waist level ....

Warning this could be dangerous. Do you have a loader on your tractor? If so use the loader to raise the rear of the rotary cutter to the height you want it. Be sure and use bracing or a prop to keep the loader from leaking down. Also limit the amount of time spent underneath the rotary cutter.
