Question for those who live in California

I’m simply amazed the people of California actually voted in Gavin Newsom.
It would make a great old school topic on psychological studies of government influence over general populace.

I could be 100% wrong, but don't think it's different than most other states where the cities make the most difference in voting.

When I actually talked with some of the locals in California about guns and politics in the rural northern region (around Calaveras county where we stayed for the majority of our 2 weeks), honestly, the people seemed absolutely no different than people in my area of NC. I was surprised what they told me about guns, some things which I wouldn't repeat here, but I 100% agree with LOL. I'm just remember thinking to myself these people really aren't nuts to live here and they're pro gun.

New York is a fabulous place to visit, and I lived and worked there, but I would never move back. Not because of the general area or the people in particular, but because Albany controls the state, and New York City controls Albany.

Govt makes stringent rules for the public and then exempts themselves
I was an employer in CA for decades. Subject to all sorts of labor and employee regulations that the State of CA exempted themselves from.

Every employer in the State of CA must pay workers no less frequently than twice per month. Or face fines, penalties, leading to a shutdown of your business. But the State of CA is exempt from that and pays its employees once per month.

I could go on and on and on ...

I haven't checked lately but not long ago Democrats in CA also had a supermajority in the state legislative offices. So the conservatives might as well not show up until the next elections, maybe not then either. Three cities overwhelm the voters in rural areas.

The greatest "experiment" involving CA, in my opinion, is rarely written about. People focus on "net" migration, such as CA lost xx thousand residents last year. But the bigger story is when tens or hundreds of thousands of upper income, tax paying residents move away and take their tax paying habits with them, replaced by migrants who have come over the border needing food, medical, and social services provided by the State. This is a much, much bigger impact than a small negative net migration. You're losing the folks who are funding the operation of government, and attracting those needing the benefits paid by government.

I'm diagonally on the opposite corner of the country, so I'm not familiar with the local scene, but what was the opposition's candidate like? Any better or just bad differently?
Our last few presidential elections seemed to offer 2 equally bad choices.

I thought for sure, when they did the recall in 2021, the people would seize the opportunity, but no, Californians snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. And as AP put it..

“will remain in Democratic control as a laboratory for progressive policies.”

The recall petition for Gavin Newsom was strong, millions of signatures including mine. Unfortunately when it came to a vote the Dems showed up and saved him.
The majority of CA population are coastal city dwellers who vote the liberal party line. Sucks for the rest of us occupying the vast majority of the land who are not of the same mindset.
There are presently about 40 mil people living in CA. Double NY state.
Sheriff Bianco of Riverside Co will run against Newsom on a law and order platform

Here is how bad it is: I didn't even know who ran against Newsom because in CA, nobody pays attention since it is a known outcome. The opponent was Brian Dahle.

The only thing noteworthy of the last CA governor election is that this is the first time in a while that the Democrat didn't get 60+ percent of the vote-- poor Newsom only got 59.2%, still a huge landslide, making the election again non-interesting and non competitive.

Equally bad choices is exactly what we have these days in most state and national elections.

A person for office these days would have to have a very thick skin to put up with the personal attacks that will come as soon a candidacy is announced. Who wants to subject themselves (and their families!) to that? We've always had that to some degree but in the past few years the personal attacks are above and beyond the pale. If the candidate identifies as a conservative then the vitriol, aided and abetted by the media, is non-stop.

Here in Nevada we have a military veteran running as a Republican for Senator against the incumbent Democrat, Jackie Rosen. This veteran was horribly disfigured in combat in Afghanistan. You'd think that disfigurement would be off-limits to political attacks? Nope! The opposition's ads are out there with caricatures of the veteran's disfigured face! Who would do something like that? No morals at all anymore!

The West Coast is entirely dominated by its cities. The rural areas get zero attention. Presidential Candidates don't even bother traveling outside Seattle, Portland, SF and LA. The last candidate to visit Eugene was.. I believe Dukakus. And we are the second... or third, depending on definition... largest city in the State. Southern Oregon is a basket case for the Repubs. They continue to support bat s*** crazy people. Crazy, as in they should seek mental health counseling. Rump didn't even file anything for the primaries. Didn't even bother. Cause Portland is Blue.... Blue.. Blue.
