A balloon may not have been a good example. Difficulty of catching the object has nothing to do with energy.
Imagine two trials at catching in your hands a bowling ball dropped from 4 feet above you. One time the ball is dry and the other time it is greased. They have the same energy. The greased one will be harder to catch. But it has nothing to do with the energy of the falling ball.
