Hi, I am strongly considering selling the F-150 and getting a F-250/350 with the new powerstroke. We currently have a 2002 F-250 with 5.4 and the mileage is terrible but it handles our equipment fine. How has everyones trucks been performing so far? Are you guys happy with the new diesel? Also, what body configuration did you get?

I went onto Fords site and everytime I tried to select the diesel it told me I could only get it with a regular cab? I need at least a super cab but would prefer a crewcab as this will be a family/construction truck so I need the room. And before anyone tries to recommend a Dodge or GM product, I go Z plan thru Ford and there is no way I will sway from my Ford roots /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

The setup I am looking for is either F-250 or 350 as the only difference is the badge, crew cab (supercab at the very least), XLT, 4x4, Diesel, heavy duty towing package and a few other little bits and pieces. I know some of you guys have trucks similar to this setup so I would like to hear from you (even if it isn't the 6.0).

Last question, does anyone know any real world numbers for mileage between the 10 cylinder and the diesel? The 5.4 gets roughly 10mpg (that is a yearly average from hot summer days to cold winter days). Thanks

We've got three of them now. All 4wd crewcab dually. The first one we got was back in March when they first came out. It had to have the injectors changed and the rear main seal. Now the new ones come with the better injectors and we have had zero problems on the new ones.

On the highay they're getting 16-21. Around the ranches 12-15. Pulling 20-30k loads we're getting 9-12.

You can get the diesel in any 250 or 350 configuration that you want. Not sure why the website wouldn't let you do it.

I know quite a few people with the v-10 and the best I have heard any of them doing on the highway is around 14 or 15. Towing most of them get 6-9.

The 2004 models seem to be doing better than the 2003's. Check out this website.

Dieselstop.com

I'm sure the people are at that website BECAUSE they are having problems, however, I think I would wait another six months and see how the new models hold up.

I think some of the reprogramming to eliminate the problems has also reduced the horsepower and mpg ratings.

Good Luck,
Kevin

At least with my truck and a couple other people I know this isn't true. My mileage went up and power is much better, especially at the low end.

What gears do you have in yours?

Mine are 3.73's and the other two are both 4.10's.

Just last week my new Excursion Limited 6.0 came in. Traded a '01 Excursion 7.3 for it (which we loved, thats why we ordered an "04 before they go out of production).

Two words-NO COMPARISON! With less than 300 miles on it, the mileage is better (yes I filled it already to check and only calculate by actual gallons to miles) and the power is like going from a 5.4 to a 7.3.

Mileage on the 7.3 averaged a calculated 16.5 over the 22,000 miles we owned it, and the first tank in the 6.0 is there already. (and I do know that the first tank isn't going to give the true picture, but I'm still impressed).

You don't even know this is a diesel after its warmed up, and even cold, its a whole lot quieter than the 7.3 when its warm.

As far as your truck questions, I can help there a little, I also have a '99 F350 Supercab SRW 8' bed 4x4 with a 7.3 and automatic (3.73 LS rear). Its averaging right at 16 MPG and about 10,000 miles of that is pulling a GN hydraulic dump trailer and grossing well over the 20,000 GCWR. The supercab is great, the back seat folds flat in the '99 and it adds a lot of extra space. Since we have the Ex we have no need for a crew cab.

Don't think you can go wrong with any Ford diesel, I've had them since the first 6.9 was available, unless things change drastically, I'll never have anything else.

Here's the pair, in case you're interested.

Thanks for the reply. I was saddened to hear Ford was dropping the Excursion but at least it wasn't because of looks like the Aztec /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif. If I had a need for a truck that big I would strongly consider the Excursion over the Expedition but that is just me (and you from the look of things /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif). Our 02' F-250 is a supercab and is nice but is cramped if you try to put adults back there which we do on occasion and it is not pretty. For short hauls it is ok but for long hauls we just take multiple trucks. This is why I am looking at the Crew Cab. If need be I will settle for a Supercab but there isn't much difference between the two in price so I would most likely get the CC.

My only concern with the 6.0 was how new it was still. Most engines have problems in the first year or two and I know the 6.0 had problems when it was first released. Glad to hear those problems have been taken care of. Thanks again for your reply. Take care.

I'd really like to order one of the Excursions with the 6.0 before they discontinue them. I'm trying to keep up with the information on when they will actually stop taking orders....there are rumors that it may last a little longer. I just want to make sure Ford has had as much time as possible to get all the kinks worked out of their production before I order.
