Few John Deere's and one Ford 3600 diesel.
the battery in my tractor died today, and a friend gave me a brand new Everstart Marine Battery. someone had used his boat one time and they bought a bettery to run the trolling motor with and just told him to keep it. its a 720 cranking amps(600 cold crankin amps). is this overkill for a 3 cyl. Yanmar John Deere diesel? i noticed that when i installed it and went to crank up the tractor, all i had to do was BARELY bump the key. the tractor itself seemed to run "differently", good different not bad different. the battery that was in the tractor before was a much smaller battery, yeat the battery box on the tractor could hold a larger battery then what i have in it now. i know it takes alot to crank a diesel, so would this Everstart Marine last awhile and do the job or should i go buy something else and stick in there? what minimum/maximum cranking amps should i get?

Well lets see here- brand new battery, it was free and it starts the tractor and runs it fine...NOPE definitely a problem, give it to me and I'll be sure to properly dispose of it for you, heck I'm in SC too so I'd only charge you a small pick up fee :D

oh i never was planning on keeping the battery even though it was given to me. it wasnt even his to give in the first place since the guy that borrowed his boat and bought the battery to use the trolling motor. i can see it now, i think i have a brand new battery, and that guy comes back wanting his. i'm deffinatley going to buy my own, i was just wondering what was a good minimum/maximum cranking amps to get for a 3cyl diesel.

It really doesn't matter if you have a big battery with lots of cranking amps because your starter will only draw as much as it will draw so it won't hurt anything...the good thing is you won't have to worry about having enough juice in the cold.

A quicker start means less wear on the starter. A bigger battery is a good thing. Put the biggest battery (CCA) that will fit in the battery box.

I have an everstart marine start/deep battery. Darned good battery. I use it to run a couple of electric winches I have mounted on trailers and such. Use it ro run an inverter for work lights and tools out in the woods and such.
Boost start various vehicles, etc.

In short I use it as a deep cycle and a high current starying battery and it works for all.

Bigger is better. Starter works less= lasts longer.Charging systems works less+lasts longer.

I am not sure why your diesel would run better once it had started. Diesels do not have to have a spark like a gas engine so basically all your electrical system does is spin the starter and heat the glow plugs or the fuel heater. If you have an electric fuel pump that will run off the electrical system when the diesel starts but it is such a low current draw that nothing much will make a difference. Deep Cycle batteries are made to be almost totally discharged and recharged over and over. If your diesel starts easily it probably wont matter what battery you buy as long as you get one with enough amps to start it initially. I would probably try to buy an eveready regular battery with as long a warranty as I could get. Whatever amp/hour battery was in your tractor when you get it make sure to get that size or larger amp/hour battery.

Deep cycle batteries really aren't made to be used as primary "starting" batteries. I would think anything over 500cca would be fine but bigger sure won't hurt anything. I would stay away from "deep cycle" ones though.

I agree with bx23barry as to the use of deep cycle batteries. Starting batteries and deep cycling batteries are designed for different functions. It's like comparing a sprinter (starting battery) to a marathon runner (deep cycling battery). Jay

Folks, there are two types of Marine batteries:

Deep Cycle or "cabin" batteries, just like a deep cycle RV battery and there are Marine Deep Cycle/Starting batteries. It should say "Deep Cycle/Starting".

The Marine Deep Cycle/Starting batteries are made with a deeer cycle than a car battery, since boats can sit for weeks or months without being cranked, yet, they can also be slow drained for radios and lights while you are not running (like when fishing or running a trolling motor) and still have the reserve to start the boat engine to get you home.

My best description is that they are like a dual purpose battery.
It's they way they are made, internally, that gives them the best of both worlds.

I have used these "Marine DeepCycle/Starting" batteries in my old Ford 1210 tractor with very good performance and longevity. And yes, helps in the cold too! Amongst farmers along the shoreline, using Deep Cycle/Starting batteries are common knowledge, and are well stocked in our auto parts stores year round, due to the demand from boaters.

You still need to match the CAs and CCAs , as normal.

SkunkWerx:

Thank you for the clarification. I did not know that they now made Marine DeepCycle/Starting combination batteries. (I have no batteries larger than a 9 Volt in my little sailboat and a 4HP yank start outboard when the winds fail :(). Jay

I've been using a marine "deep cycle" battery in my JD 38hp for 6 months now, no problems. I bought new ones for the boat that were on sale at Cabelas Bargain Cave for $25. My only concern was whether the charging system would care about the back-draw resistance it uses to know when to cut down the field current. Does not seem to care.

The deep cycle means that a trolling motor will draw the battery power down until its almost completely dead, unlike most vehicle batteries which always hover around 12 volts because of continuous charging. My bass boat only sees a charger when the batteries are dead. They do not share charging from the outboard's charging system. When dead, they don'r care that they will be born again.

Anyways, a deep cycle is also useful for tractors where the DC generator or AC alternator is dead and you need to run. You can get a lot of starts out of a deep cycle without ruining it. 4 -5 DOAs on a regular batter pretty much swells up the plates.

The bigger, higher cappacity battery will heat up the glow plugs more quickly (or get them more hot if you always use the same 20 seconds of time), so it actually can run better at initial start.
