My landpride 1872 makes the same noise when engaging without using the clutch.

Right! I'm thinking the OP needs to clutch the tractor before hittin the PTO switch. But he said the clutch does effect the PTO. Doesn't sound right to me?

With some of the electrically actuated PTOs, depressing the clutch doesn't help, unfortunately. There doesn't appear to be anyway to feather the engagement.

I had a L3240 GST. The PTO clutch was driven direct from the engine, like the OP's gear tractor. The clutch pedal only controls the traction. It's a live PTO, so if you need to clutch in order to change gears the PTO will remain under power.

Well, that sucks! I'd trade it in on a L3800DT with a two stage clutch and munual pto leaver...:thumbsup:

So it sounds to me, when you hit the pto switch, it's like popping the pto clutch on an old school tractor? Instant engage. Sounds bad to me. If this is one of the 'bells & whistles' on the Grand L's, then no thank you...:eek:
It's new but not the Grand, it is the previous model. You are correct as to clutch popping. LandPride talks about soft start PTO option with I don't have.

I'm still having a problem with the above statement. Try clutching the tractor when you engage the PTO and let us know what happens.
No difference with clutch in or out.

Bummer! You'll need to get used to the shimmy shimmy bam slam then.

I was seriously considering a L4600DT until I found out it had an electric pto switch. Now I'm looking at other options for replacing our old larger rig.

I've been running bush hogs 30 years and never tighten one that tight. Never had one work loose. This with different brands and sizes.
Im glad for your good fortune.
,,,. My experience is that fasteners are sized to stabilize the joint against any movement, and the joint material is of like strength to endure the bolt force. After seeing multiple bolts loosen multiply on my dad and me copying him I began to tighten fasteners to their full spec when the joined parts were sufficiently robust to take it. Thats the only way Iv found to produce a long term secure joint under load reversal and shock conditions.
