question about bush hogs

I hear people speak of "stump jumpers" when bush hogs are talked about. What is the stump jumper? Is it the hub that holds the blades or is a brush hog considered a stump jumper?
Probably a rookie question but I just don't know.

Stump jumpers are typically circular metal pieces located just above the swinging bush hog blades. A stump will hit that rather than try to stab a hole through the top of your bush hog housing.

If you have a choice, try to get a bush hog where the stump jumper stays in place when you remove the bush hog blades for sharpening. This was not the case on the JD LX4 but is the case on the Frontier 4' bush hog that I now have.

Some cutters don't have the circular pan, just the bar to mount the swinging blades.

Sure not going to say the reason for the stump jumper is not what you are saying and no doubt it would help with what you said but I always though that was so the cutter would ride up and over a stump or "jump the stump" rather than straight arms hitting a solid stump damaging a gear box. It no doubt does both.
