Pumping diesel fuel

I use a 5 gal yellow can w/ wide mouth funnel as stated earlier. Works fine for my JD4700. I may buy another can if I work (play?) with it for 8+ hr/day. I keep the can in the back of the pickup, straped in and fill it every time I'm going out to the tractor.

..Are you highlighting my spelling mistakes?

Huh? I just looked and looked, and I didn't see any spelling mistakes. Honest! I guess I don't notice stuff like that. What did you mis-spell? /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

...BT, not real sure where you got your pump, but all companies that handles pumps around here (farm stores, co-op's and parts stores) carry the hose unit to mount onto the pump.

Duh! /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif I didn't even think of that! Thanks... /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Bob
It's something to do with i before e or e before i. I can't ever remenber which. Not too literate.

Well, this ain't the literacy forum.. and you sure know tractors! I'm not very literate either. I wonder if Muhammad is getting ready to give both of us the boot... /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

...Mayhaps this link will will be of interest for a hose.

Cool! Amazing what you can find on the Internet, isn't it? Thanks Egon.

By the way BOB, checked the site for your pump yesterday, and they didn't have any hose of the right type.

Cowboydoc,
Your sure right about rubber garden hose, but vinyl hose works just fine. It's a lot easier to find then SAE J1527 type A-2 (high nitrile), and a whole lot cheaper.
Al

Edit: I should have qualified rubber and vinyl.
Natural rubber and diesel hate each other, rapid deteriation. Neoprene rubber and diesel get along pretty, good minor discoloration. Vinyl (PVC) is excellent with diesel.

Let's see . . ., what was that old poem?

I before E
except after C
or when sounded like A
as in neighbor or weigh
/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif I think that was it./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Oh well.. I'm leaning more toward my neighbor farmer at this point anyway. But the site you pointed me to has lots of other neat stuff!

Now, I admit up front that I've only put fuel in my tractor three times so far, but it was so simple, something must be wrong.

Since I have to trailer it to where I use it, the first two times I just stopped at the gas station and used the pump.

The last time, I wanted to put in #1, so I bought some in 2 1/2 gallon plastic kerosene jugs. Set on the hood adjacent to the fuel tank, then I put in a $2 siphon pump. Pump it a couple times to get it flowing, come back in a couple minutes and the jug is empty.

That seems pretty easy considering how little fuel these things use.

ooooh, a siphon pump! I hadn't even thought of that! Duh.

So many options, for such a seemingly simple problem. I bought two 5-gallon yellow diesel cans, thinking that even a scrawny pale guy like me could easily manage a measly 5 gallons. But I spilled a significant amount, because I was balancing with one foot on the operator platform and the other on the front tire. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

A siphon! This might be even easier than having to bother the farmer with periodic payments (he has a big operation, and I doubt he wants to complicate his operation with occassional $10 payments from me. I'll pick his brain some more, but this is a good idea. Of course if my little hand pump worked from a normal gas can, that would be another option.

Isn't it amazing how many little issues I can come up with? /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

Bob, What I do is fill a 30gal. poly barrel at my farmer neighbors, and then use my pump to fill the tractor. I treat all 30 gal. with Power Services when I fill the barrel. I just drive over to his farm with the barrel in my front bucket and fill it up. I pay him cash and give a little extra for his time. Works out well for me this way, as I only need to do it about 3-4 times a year.

Bird, he's obviously telling me to forget about fueling the 4300, and simply buy a pig instead. But, how does one fuel a pig? /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Bird,

/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif I was sure you would get that one. I guess you know how to spell geography without any help. If it wasn't for that little cricket on Disney I bet there would be a whole bunch of folks wouldn't be able to spell encyclopedia
