Pulled the trigger today on a Duramax

Nice looking truck! Like diamond pilot said, a bump up in tire size looks great on those trucks. The reason it feels like twice the truck as your tundra is because it's at least that if not more, I'm sure you'll be very happy with it.

If the Late LLY truly has the bigger intake then you will be fine. It's a large cone filter the size of a paint can. My 05 had a small car like filter and at 90 deg would overheat with 12,000# behind it. What about the radiator and injector issues? We're they addressed also on the late LLY engines to LBZ standards?

On your hitch, make sure the rails will go in without interference underneath with the existing hitch. I would think it could cause a issue. Especially with mounting points.

It looks like a clean truck. I think the price is right. My neighbor just sold his 07 Classic 3500 SRW 4x4 LBZ with 103,000 miles for $30,000.

When it's time for tires put on some 265 or 285's in 70's and it will dress up the open square wheel wells a bunch.

Smart move on the extended warranty. I have never bought one and I have now owned 26 vehicles. Bought a car last week. But if buying a used diesel I think the warranty would be a must.

I have researched the 06 LLY/LBZ issue till I'm blue, and everyone says the same thing. The motors (of 06 models with 6spd Allison) are mechanically identical. GM did not use the new programming for the 55hp gain until it was EPA certified, so they programed it with LLY program. When it was certified, the renamed the engine for marketing. The LBZ (2005.5 to 2007.5) is mechanically the same.

I have even been finding through more searching that dealer will reflash the FICM on the 2005.5-2006 LLY's with the LBZ program. In fact I was just reading a mechanics post where he was wondering why the 09/2005 built LLY would not accept LLY software. It's actually an LBZ FICM I am learning. Curious stuff here.

The rods are stronger, the pistons are newer style. Injectors are LBZ as well. Here's my engine. You can see the LBZ factory intake. Worst case scenario I leave it as is and have a MUCH more durable engine. My only concern is will the newer flash cost me MPG? I was getting 18.2 hwy on my trip Friday.

I still need to check for the rail mounting for interference with the GN mount. Worst case is I buy the Curt (same brand as 5th wheel sliding hitch) GN to 5th wheel adapter. CURT Manufacturing - CURT X5 5th Wheel Adapter Plate #16310 | CURT Manufacturing Pricey but easier and will let me have the whole bed. Although I was getting used to the rails.

Yea it probably really is. So far I am still getting used to all that "rattling" when giving it the gas, makes you think something's gonna pop! But as that wears off my foot might occasionally get a little heavier, feeling all that power.:D Da BEAST!

In my experience, The LBZ will get 1 to 1.5 mpg less than LLY. I know of two LBZ trucks that can't easily beat 16.5 mpg on the highway empty. If it were my truck I would leave it stock and enjoy.

Nice truck. I know you will like it, especially pulling a trailer. But I am a little biased. The 03 has 190,000 miles, injectors and pump changed under recall years ago, rebuilt the front diff at 100,000 when a bearing went bad, new water pump at 150,000. The 08 has 100,000 miles. I still have the factory brake pads on the 03. Other than that just regular maintenance.

Diesels need clean air, oil, and fuel. I get an oil change and air filter every 10,000 miles. For me that's twice a year for each truck, runs about $125 at the dealership. Fuel filter every 50,000. A little money up front is well worth it.

I maintain 2 LBZ trucks, a 06 and 07. Neither have that intake or filter, it's different. My 05 LLY was different also.

As for mpg. What I have seen the LBZ is better. 65 mph will pull in 21 stock with good fuel. That's a issue with diesel. There is just a minimum rating. Unlike gas where it meets a octane rating.

There ya go complicating things even more. ha ha. Well, I have spoken with a NUMBER of sources now and ALL confirm it's an LBZ engine, with the LLY tune. It has the LBZ injectors, rods, pistons and heads, just de-tuned, so I wonder if up tuning would help or hurt?????

Argggg!

I'd just go with an aftermarket tuner;

Bullydog
Superchips
Hyper tech

Etc.

Will also allow you to adjust speedo for your projected bigger tires

If you are going to tune it EFI live seems to be about the best for the duramax, many custom tunes out there and some for mileage gains.

Kennedy Diesel dot com. ECM program replacements/swaps. He has them down to a science.

The simplest way to verify which series you have is the VIN# of the truck. The 8th digit is the engine ID and it will either be a 1, 2, D, or 6.
• 01-04 LB7 is a 1
• 04.5-05 LLY is a 2
• 06 LLY is a 2 (uses same mods as LBZ)
• 06-07 LBZ is a D
• 07 LMM is a 6 (new body style GMT 900 series)

Stock 2007 LBZ with 5,600 miles.... 15 MPG regardless...my third Duramax and last...waiting on the Cummins in other makes in 2016.
etc...
