After having my 1500 for a couple weeks now it really seems to be a good tractor, i have become pretty good with the box blade now after several attempst at my driveway. I am going to pick up a 4 foot bush hog today that i found on craigslist. I was wondering what speed does everyone usually keep there tractor in when bushhoggin. I assume my pto has two speeds, neutral and i can bump it up or back. I am not sure if it needs to be pushed up or pulled back, Thanks. Jeremy

If you have the owner's manual it should have your PTO speeds listed for a given RPM...they'll usually give 2 RPM readings with the corresponding PTO speeds.

YM1500 PTO Speeds

1st 639 rpm
2nd 828 rpm
3rd 1097 rpm

@ 2400 rpm

I would run it in 1st @ about 2100, that should be close to 540 rpm.
You do need to use an overrun clutch.

Look at the decal on my 1610 D,
but maybe there is someone who can translate the japaneese (speed? or what ever) what is written beside the gearnumbers?

Hi Danny, the speed of the PTO was Known at the speed of 2500 RPM.

I was thinking of the japaneese singns after the "gear sheme"(left side of the pic).

most US implements are designed to turn at 540rpm, anything faster can and will destroy the gearbox over time. Danny gave you the best info, gear 1 @ 2100 rpm.

overrun clutch is well worth the money...if you don't know what that is or why you need it....when you press the clutch in the blades on the mower will continue to turn and can push your tractor forward as it spins the PTO and transmission. The overrun clutch is like a ratchet it stops the force from entering the trans. Without it you will not be able to change gears (it will grind really bad if you try until the blades stop spinning) or stop fast enough to avoid hitting say a "fence", been there done that, went out and bought one before I finished mowing that day.
