Hi, i need some help with my wood chipper. Today the fly wheel on the chipper stopped spinning.
The PTO shaft spins.
Can anyone tell me if there is a shear pin in the chipper mechanism?
Thank you for your help!

Are you going to tell us any of the details of the chipper or the tractor, or do we have to guess?

It's a Chinese built bx-42.
My tractor is a JD 4700.
Both units were running great
Just stopped spinning. I can spin it by hand. So nothing seems to be lodged.

Most likely there will be a shear bolt on the chipper end of the PTO shaft near where it connects. I have a WoodMaxx and I have to start it out at a little over idle then slowly bring it up to speed or I will snap the bolt. Same when I shut it off - I hit the clutch in and shut the PTO off and just wait for it to quit spinning before I let the clutch back out so I don't snap the bolt. Works well and never break them anymore.
Good luck!

I will look for that pin.
I thought I was babying it.
But I guess not.
Ok thanks for your help!

Sometime they seem to get stressed over time and then just snap. Mostly a very easy and quick fix. I keep a few shear pins in the tool box on the tractor so I don't need to run back to the shop if one breaks.
Now and then one will get stuck and you may need to tap it out with a punch but hopefully it will just drop right out if it has not already.

Code54 thanks for your help. I wont get back to the tractor till Thurs. It is at my cabin.
The shear pin you replace. Is it in the chipper unit or is it the shear pin on your PTO?

The PTO shaft, right near the end. Basically goes through the pto shaft, then through the chipper shaft then back through the other side of the PTO Shaft.
The photo sort of gives the general idea.

Ok great. Thanks for the help. Can't wait to get back to camp to work on it.
Thanks again!

The comments above bring a question to mind. I have a Woodmaxx chipper and the shear pin is on the "tractor end" of the PTO drive shaft. It is usually the other way around, in my experience. Why does it matter?? I follow their instructions, but it would fit either way.

Look at a brush hogs with round input shafts, and the pto shaft is coupled with a shear bolt, and the shaft is retained with a E or split ring.

Shear pin pops, pto shaft still spins.

If you put the shear protection at the tractor end, when it pops, the pto shaft will not spin. You see this 'tractor end' protection sometimes with devices that have a torque limiting device that is part of the pto yoke. ( many are slip cllutches ). I guess the downside is weight on the stub end of the pto shaft... of course the weight is going to be somewhere.. mower input shaft or pto stub shaft. guess the mower input shaft is easier to reseal. ;)

Some shafts have a bolt with self locking nut left with play. Do you have the manual? Should say what grade. My Land Pride implements use a grade 2 bolt. Past posts have discussed the grade, some seems like use grade 5 and some mild steel. You may need to experiment if no manual.
