PTO shaft seal leak

Took the tractor (2004 Mahindra 2310), and tiller to a friends house to till his 1/2 acre garden. I had just finished the first pass of tilling when I noticed a leak on the ground, and found it was leaking from around the PTO shaft. I assumed I blew out the PTO shaft seal, as shown in the attached PDF files, that I scanned out of my service manual and parts catalog.

So, do you think I just need to order just the shaft seal and be done with it?
Does anyone know what may have caused the leak, or what is usually the cause of this type of leak?

I know it's hard to determine without looking at the parts to see what failed in this case. I know I will have to order the parts and trying to get an idea if I should order anything else. I haven't taken any tools to it as it was getting late last Sunday to tear into it and I have a day job to get to Monday morning. My friend live 45 miles away, so it's not an easy trip during the weekdays.

3 major causes of seal leaks:

1, age.. just plain wore out.

2, bad bearing, bearing wear allows play, which hogs seal out.

3, mechanical interference from debri wrapped around the shaft at the seal fact.. IE.. wires and vines can roll up and eat the seal out.

I'd check for up/down/side/side play on the pto stub.. any play.. and you have a bearing going..

Well the shaft was clean and clear of any debris.

It's hard to have the tractor over 45 miles away and not be able to get to it after work, because it's not on the way home from work. So it's up to just the weekends to go over, take out the PTO shaft and see what's up.

Grab the stub and give it a few ynaks before pulling it.. you will know i fthe bearing is bad immediatly.

Hi Soundguy.
I've developed a leak at my PTO shaft on my Ford 3910. I think because of an out of balance/bent shaft on my brush hog. Do I have to crack the rear end to fix it?

If the pto seal is bad, yeah.. the bearing carrier will have to be yanked and then the seal replaced.. but check the bearing too.

$5.40 for the seal and the rear axle has to come apart ???
I think I'll wait on that repair.

Why the rear axle?.. why not just the bearing carrier?

Is that the part around the PTO shaft? I think I have to pull out my papers and look a bit closer. Is it a big job pulling the bearing carrier?
