I purchased a used 6' County Line tiller and a used 6' box blade today. The tiller is missing the tractor portion of the PTO shaft. Looks like I can get one from TSC for around $120. Does anyone know of a better place to buy one? It is the triangular shaped shaft. I wasn't really planning on buying the tiller but he made me a deal on both that I felt was pretty good so... Box blade is on the light side, has no shanks with it and will not work with my QA, but better than no box blade I think.

Looks like I could get a new slip clutch and all from Ebay for about $150. Don't know if it would be any good.

Check your local tractor dealers. For some things they beat TSC.

Get the one with the clutch. We never know what's underneath the ground and that one time you find out something on the ground, can get expensive really fast.

I've smacked roots, rocks and all kinds of stuff with tillers over the years. On my previous tractor (Kubota B7000), I didn't use a clutch or a PTO shaft with mechanical fuse because it was a proprietary tiller with their 2 point hitch, but every time I hit a rock or a root, I though for sure that I would break the transmission case inside, where the PTO gears are. The tractor would grab the root and just launch the tractor forward.

It appears the slip clutch is already on the unit, you just need need the other half of the shaft. Don't forget to adjust the slip clutch before using it. Most are frozen from sitting.

I would replace the entire shaft/clutch assembly.

Why?

IF it was me, I'd look around for used parts in good condition...

SR

My thought was to look for a used tractor side shaft that fits and then loosen up the current slip clutch and try to get it to break free. It is pretty rusty. If I can't find a used shaft and have to buy a new one I will probably just get a new clutch also. Just have not found anywhere in this area for used parts yet. Checked CL and fleabay with no luck.

Check Agri Supply. I bought one for the same type tiller with slip clutch a couple years ago. I think mine was a series 4 shaft. Make sure implement end of shaft matches gearbox(splined vs smooth). Less than $200.00 and comes with shields.

Call the farm tractor dealers, many times they have things like that used.

Last time I needed one, I bought an excellent used one for $45.00.

I think that depends a bit on where you live.
Looking for used tractor parts in Southeastern New England (me) would involve at least a 100+ mile drive each way, just to search.
A $200 PTO shaft/clutch new,......... or a wasted day/200+ mile round trip, only to find that a $45 used shaft is too short, or was damaged/abused, would be an easy decision for me.

Checked local dealers today and they all wanted to sell me a $300 PTO or make the front half for $200. I called and talked to Brooks Ag Parts in Ohio and they were very helpful. What I need is coming and the cost was a bit over $100 with shipping. $300 would have been 1/2 what I paid for the whole tiller! $100 I can handle. Seems no one here fixes things they just throw money at it.

Thanks for the suggestions.

So..... I call some tractor junk yard 100+ miles away.
The guy on the phone tells me that he has just what I need.
I pay for the part plus shipping.
When it arrives, the clutch is frozen, and the shaft is cut too short, is bent, or the spline count is wrong.
Why would I want to risk that?

If I could pick it out myself.......that would be OK.
200 miles of driving, and a whole day wasted is not OK.

You obviously are a very poor buyer of used parts!

Over here where "I" live, they will take pictures of it, all the measurments ect. and send all the info to you...

I guess I'm just a LOT better at knowing what to ask ect., after seeing the picts. ect

OK, I concede, you should always buy new!

Yah really think that?.... No!

I have not bought a new car since 1992, so I have 5 (old) cars.
I have never bought a new tractor (except a cheapo lawn tractor).
I bought a used airplane.
I bought a used motor yacht.
I live in a 290 year old house.

Sometimes buying new actually makes sense,...... on more costly items it almost always does not.

For an under $200 shaft/clutch that is missing/broken, it would be new for me every time, cause I don't want to build it, or fix it, I just want to use it.

For many years I did live .......over there,.... where you live.

Be sure to watch this video before you install the PTO shaft and use the tiller.

You were the one arguing NEW.

Like I said earlier, I bought a perfectly good pto shaft used, for $45.00 (not the first one I've bought) and I'm still using it without any repairs at all...

SO, $200 is a lot of money to me, apparently not so much to you though...and I'm fine with that...

Internet prices are substantially less than your $300 "local dealers" prices.
