PTO on 8N won’t attach to mower shaft. My 8N PTO has a kind of slight flange around it that keeps the u-joint from sliding on enough to engage the button shaft that secures it. Anyone have any ideas? IMG_0891.jpegIMG_0892.jpeg

Try cleaning all the accumulated crud off first. That shaft as well as the shaft retainer is putrid looking. Cleaning off the crud in the shaft retainer might actually provide enough clearance to where the implement pto shaft will engage the lock on the stub shaft.

You could buy a pto stub shaft extender that secures to the stub with a bolt.

I find that sometimes I have to move the end of the shaft side to side while trying to mate them works.

Is the issue that the enlarged portion shielding the push pin of the connector is hitting the flange just before it would latch in,
you could grind of some of the raised portion of the coupling to clear the pro shaft flange.

Shaft extenders can cause problems with vibration and shaking of the pto shaft. If needed you can get shaft size adapters that are not extenders.

I would do one of two things.... Remove flange from tractor and grind (or machine if you have lathe or milling capabilities) off enough for "U" joint collar to fit, or grind off enough of "U" Joint collar to clear flange.... Personally I would cut back flange on tractor side if the is enough material to be removed with out exposing a seal or bearing as a one time fix so if you ever use a different PTO couple you would not also have to modify it if there was a interference problem....

I have tried to connect an implement to the tractor PTO for the first time.

I could not get the attachment to slide onto the PTO. I think it is a subtle alignment issue between the female splines of the implement and the male splines of the tractor PTO.

New PTO powered implements, connecting to new tractor PTO splines are always difficult. Once implement and tractor PTO parts are somewhat worn in, mating becomes easier.

Clean mating parts, lubrication and technique are the keys.

Most here like Eureka Fluid Film as PTO lube. I prefer wax chain lube in an aerosol can.

Grease is too thick.

WD-40 burns off. Shaft goes on "OK" cold but can be difficult to disconnect when hot. WD-40 leaves a sticky fish-oil residue which accumulates dust.

Connect the implement to the tractor via two Lower Link pins and one Top Link pin. Lift implement hydraulically until implement PTO shaft and tractor PTO spines are perfectly level, one with the other.

Turn tractor engine off, disengage PTO so tractor PTO splines can be turned by hand.

Turn male splines by hand until they align with female shaft indents. Slide shaft onto tractor splines. Retract whatever type of detent you have, button or collar, then push the implement shaft the final two inches onto the tractor PTO stub.

If the PTO shaft and tractor splines are NOT perfectly level it is almost impossible to shove implement shaft on to tractor PTO splines.

I am 76 years old. I can mount an implement and connect the PTO on my heavier tractor without too much difficulty in five minutes

Hi folks...took a bit of time and fussing but wanted to update you. PTO connection problem was resolved by leveling the implement to the PTO.

In each of the OP's pictures there is obvious misalignment.

I believe a good cleaning of the output shaft of the tractor with a wire brush followed up by a good lubrication on the shaft and I believe it will go, I use grease and don't have any trouble getting different pto shafts too hook up, one other thing I do is slide the two ends of the shaft apart and coat the male side with white lithium grease and put them back together because I want that pto shaft to slide with little to no effort.

I'd buy a new tractor that the yoke fits on.
