I have a 1970 MF-135 and cannot figure out why the PTO jumps out of gear while mowing. I have to work while hanging on to the PTO lever to prevent it from jumping out of gear. It does not happen all the time but will do it more frequently when under a heavy load or going over bumps.

Also, something I never needed to use until I got my new bush hog is the leveling crank. It is greased but is stuck. I can't get it to turn.

Any ideas on both these problems? Thanks for the help.

I don't have a lot of experience with tractors. This is my first one. I bought it used about 8 years ago and have been learning ever since. All I know is I have two PTO options; proportional ground speed and proportional engine speed. I only use engine speed.

I never used the leveling crank before. I knew it was there but never needed to use it. My finish mower and blade were always level. However, my new bush hog is not level. That said it looks like it is in. The handle will not move in either direction.

Remove the cover with the PTO handle, look if there are heavy wear on the gear that engages the PTO. Any slack in the bearing at the rear?

No slack in the bearing. Everything seems tight. I didn't see excessive wear.

I think there is a spring loaded lock on the lever, did that work?

I unstuck my leveling crank by heating the heck out of it then forcing more grease into the zerk. Yes, I think there was fire, but it was years ago and I was outside.

the rod that comes out of the crank assembly should be able to be turned with a stillson wrench just make sure the handle is not locked when you start braking it loose
