Hi,

I have modified my king kutter 7' tiller to be quick hitch compatible. The pto shift that came with it s too short when using the quick hitch. It looks like a pto extension of about 4-5 inches would work. I have seen pto extensions that would solve this issue but I am a bit concerned that extending the tractor end would put more stress on the tractor pto shaft. Maybe there is nothing to worry about but I have no experience with these.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks

Measure your PTO shaft, end to end, completely collapsed i.e. not connected to your tractor. Then measure it, end to end, when attached to you PTO. Difference will be the overlap. If you have book for your PTO shaft it will give you a recommended overlap in inches or mm. If specified in mm, just divide mm by 25.4 to get inches.

If you don't have book for your shaft, you should be able to get info online.

Thanks. Don't have a book. It is to short. Only about 2 inches or less overlap when down. Without the quick hitch about 4 to 5 inches overlap. Works good.

Assume this is a CAT 1 cutter? Even 4-5 inches overlap is marginal. Most of the extensions will only give you about 3" extension. Tractor Supply sells the tractor end of PTO shafts, in various lengths for about $110. Do you know what brand of PTO shaft you have? You might take the tractor half of your PTO shaft off and try to find one that is longer for some safety factor. Maybe 6-8" longer than what you have now?

If an extension will give you the length you need, go for it. It shouldn't put more stress on the tractor. It will, in theory make your PTO shaft wear out sooner because it won't be a perfect fit and the wobble will increase wear. Since it's on a tiller and probably (i'm assuming here, so correct me if I'm wrong) won't be used more than a couple dozen hours a year, it probably isn't a big deal.

Gustafson is right, though, a longer shaft is better and safer. The extension will likely make the yoke of the PTO shaft protrude past the shield on your tractor, so it's less safe than the right length shaft.

TSC has a pretty poor selection of PTO shafts at some of the stores. Go to your nearest tractor junk yard and get one end off of a abused bush hog. Would be best to pull yours off and take it with you. I was mowing somethings I should not have so became quite familiar with twisting the shafts. TSC had some long {18 inch} extensions last year in their clearance stuff. The internet will be far cheaper then TSC. A seven foot tiller will be putting some torque on the PTO so either take your quick hitch off ;or do it right with the correct PTO length.

Yes TSC is very expensive for drive shafts. You can also look at northern tool, they have a good variety.

Here's what you need:
Pto Adapter

This adapter adds 4" or so, which should be just enough to accommodate your quick hitch.

I've used one with my chipper for several years...no problems.
You do want to keep the angle of the PTO drive shaft yokes to 15 degrees or less...
