Pto driven wagon

Many of the European model tractors have multiple speed PTO's and many also have a selector to have a ground speed or transmission powered pto. The ground speed is powered from the final drives so it has a rotational speed that is proportional to the rear axle speeds increasing as you go higher in the gears. This allows the pto driven implements to have a ground speed drive that matches up with the tractors. Ie. in first gear the pto output shaft is turning very slowly and the speed increases as you go up in gears till you get into your highest gear at which point it is turning the fastest.
Very few North American models have it installed.

It would be about as fast as the truck would have been at a low idle in whatever gear gave it a 1:1 ratio on the transmission.

I tested my theory today in my 7.3 dually and at 500 rpm or slightly above in 5th gear which should be direct drive it was going 15 mph which was about the result I expected. I don’t know the rear end ratio but I expect it’s 4.11. If you had a 1000 rpm PTO you could get some decent speed that way.

I'm in Canada and these were pretty common growing up in the rural areas when people used to cut pulp wood as a job. They were called power trailers. If you had a tractor with ground speed it matched pretty well and one of those trailers with large dual wheels and a load of pulp wood were nearly unstoppable with a tractor. If your tractor didn't have ground speed they would use a transmission on the trailer and put a long shifter handle on it so you could reach back and shift it. Usually they would only somewhat match in 1 gear, reverse usually didn't match but you could work the clutch with it in reverse to get out of a jamb.
They were built from old truck rear ends, transmissions, and frames. People would put chains on the dual wheels on the trailer and they used them right through the winter.
Now very few people cut pulp wood as a job, and the ones that do are using large excavators with harvester processing heads and they run them 24 hours a day, usually owned by the forestry company that now completely dominates the industry. The other thing that happened is 4wd tractors became common and the need to have a power trailer disappeared. I have an old power trailer that I had used over 25 years ago with a 2wd Ford tractor, haven't used it since. Even 25 - 30 years ago, small operators had switched from tractors and power trailers to skidders and porters for logging work. The old power trailers can still be found in rural areas, some of the ones with old army truck tires still hold air!

tractor ground pto

This is very unclear to me. Please clarify.

WHERE ARE YOU LOCATED?
Massey had a gear on the pinion and a mating gear on the PTO shaft. This was started I believe on the TO35 (in the US) in the 50's. It was continued at least into the 70's. The idea is to drive tools as a hay rake or other tools the could be slowed down or sped up as tractor speed increased or decreased. It was also useful for backing out a plug on a PTO driven implement if it did not have an over running clutch..
These tractors also had an engine driven PTO. The selecter lever on the left side was Ground -Off - Engine.

Most newer tractors have gotten away from the ground speed PTO less parts to install and cheaper to build.
Was used on the transmission driven, or live PTO (double clutch) Could not be installed on tractors with independent PTO, no room in the housing.

Just to clarify --
Transmission driven PTO -- runs off the transmission -- starts and stops with transmission
Live PTO -- Driven by a separate clutch than the transmission often referred to as a two stage or double clutch. !st stage drives the transmission, 2nd stage drives PTO.
Independent PTO -- Uses a separate clutch not connected with the transmission clutch. Can be started or stopped at anytime the engine is running. Think of an electric clutch on garden/lawn tractor or Z turn.

And those double clutches on the Massey’s can be very stiff. And straight down too. An operators left leg can become Popeye’d.

Whoa!

Easy to sink $10K into one of those two wheel tractor setups. Though I would like one (a lot), the price just seems high compared to the work I would get out of it.

This should go in the 2 wheel tractor thread, I know)
I think I've seen something like this in the SE Asia many years ago.
