I think it depends on what you mean by climbers using it. You wouldn't want low stretch rope in a fall. You would want low stretch rope for static lines.

Yup, that's what I'm talking about. I would use this much of the time for felling - with a snatch block.

You can get it for much less - that $600+ is for a 1000' of brand-name forestry rope. Like buying parts for your tractor from the dealer.

When I worked at a machine shop, we took a six inch diameter piece of round stock, about 8 inches long and cut a radii on a lathe making what you have, except mine was a curved surface rather than flat. Cut an old pto shaft end down and then slid it into a hole drilled into the end using a press fit, and then welded it in place. I used my pto winch to raise and lower a weight to drive pipes for a water well.
I will have to locate it and take a picture for posting.

Yeah, I looked at them but didn't find any that would work for me. The 3:1 reduction is rated at only 13 hp input and my PTO is 31 hp. MossRoad only has 20 hp at his PTO. There are some others out there though that are worth tracking down.

How about starting with an independent suspension differential, something like a Subaru, welded so it doesn't differentiate?

I was thinking of that too. Even using the transmission itself as one does not really need two capstans. There are a lot of gear boxes for ag use being made in China, I've seen a number that would work, configuration wise but finding one with the right reduction gearing has been a challenge - these come with the PTO shaft already on it too and the prices are pretty good.
