PT425 Brown Grass

I worked with my PT425 and mini-hoe to remove some woody shrubs and a deteriorated stump yesterday. The tractor and mini-hoe did a fine job but today I noticed that the grass that was underneath the motor area appeared to have turned brown. Nothing is leaking so I'm suspecting heat caused this.

My future customers may not be too happy with scorched grass, has anyone else noticed this happening while using the PT 425 in a confined area?

I'm not a welder, but a buddy or mine made a crude fabrication that worked great for me. I too am a Landscape Designer and my clients weren't very happy. This solved the problem

I agree that you need to rout the exhaust up and away from the grass. Our Kohler has the exhaust straight out the rear of the PT, so it is not a problem.

Maybe we should mention this to Power Trac so they can make a design change. It is an important feature.

I think they have already addressed this. My newly purchased 180 has a black steel 'deflector' mounted under the downward facing exhaust path. I'll post a picture when I get home from work. The bend in the deflector is at a compound angle so it deflects away from the PT as well as... either back or forward... don't quite remember now. I'm assuming back but you know what they say about making assumptions. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Probably should since it appears that they don't use their own products. If they did they would have seen the problem.

Thanks for verifying exhaust heat is the culprit. If you could post or send me a picture of your fabrication, I would appreciate it. If you don't have a picture, info on how you connected it to the tractor would be helpful.

I found some pics here at work that show it (although not too close). I was wrong about the compound angle. It's just a piece of steel folded down about 135 degrees and then given a slight 'twist'.

You can't really see the twist in this one from the side.

This one from the rear shows the 'twist' which deflects the exhaust slightly back.

I removed that deflector plate when I installed the SuperTrap muffler. If you agree to reimburse my shipping I'll send it to you. Better yet, get a SuperTrap and give your ears a break in addition to stopping the brown grass syndrome.
