Many people here use synthetic for their diesels but I use 15/40 Rotella T because I change oil fairly often anyway; yearly or 100 hours.
Make sure, make sure the oil is rated for diesel as there is a difference. I was told that gasoline engine rated oil will scrub the cylinder walls and diesel rated oil will keep them lubed. Don't take the explanation to the bank because it was 30 years ago I was told that, but I make sure diesel oil for diesel engines.
I think the only difference between diesel and gas engine oils is different (maybe more) detergent to keep the diesel soot in solution. That was a doubt when we (in oil industry where I worked in my career) found out 0wxx oils from synthetics were the best. They found out the proper detergent to use later to hold the soot. You could probably use a gas engine oil in a diesel if you changed at 100 hours instead of the more generally recommended 200 hours. Think I could get by with this on my Isuzu diesel because it seems so very clean, very little smoke or soot. However, since I'm letting it go 100 hours and several years, I'm sticking with the Castrol 5w30 for TDIs in it like for my JD tractor.
