G'day Mate and welcome to TBN from Downunder.

Either will work fine... but it may depend on where you are located.

Let us know, generally.

Many people here use synthetic for their diesels but I use 15/40 Rotella T because I change oil fairly often anyway; yearly or 100 hours.

Make sure, make sure the oil is rated for diesel as there is a difference. I was told that gasoline engine rated oil will scrub the cylinder walls and diesel rated oil will keep them lubed. Don't take the explanation to the bank because it was 30 years ago I was told that, but I make sure diesel oil for diesel engines.

No offence but you own the most trouble prone and widely disliked Deere tractor ever built . Even hardened loyal JD collectors only purchase a 2010, paint it and then park it in the shed between a 1010 and a 3010.

I didn't know any better when I bought it, but so far it runs great and no problems. Hopefully when something does go wrong I do like to work on
anything mechanical it will but a nice project.

I would take that 2010 over any of these new imported Asian tractors anytime.

I love my 1964 2010 gas. It will start after sitting for a year on the first or second turn. It starts at 5 below zero at about 4 turns . It is a pleasure to drive. I hear the diesel has a bad rep but would buy another 2010 gas anytime.

The only diesel rated oil in 30w that I can get here in Virginia is 5w30 for VW TDIs from our local VW dealership. That's what I use in both my JD 2025R and Isuzu diesel. This is after I ran the Castrol 5w30 for nearly 70k miles, changing every 10k, on our VW TDI.

Auto places and Walmart seem to only carry diesel rated oils in 40w.

In your case, the Castrol 5w30 (or other, if you can get it. Can get M1 5w30 ESP oil for diesels online, but it's expensive.) would be better than 10w30. Think 10w30 is nothing more than the old 30w oil. The lower xw30 is better to protect the upper valve train on startup. Don't believe those oil charts showing upper limits by oil grade. They only make sense for air cooled engines. 30w is good for any temps in Oz.

I think the only difference between diesel and gas engine oils is different (maybe more) detergent to keep the diesel soot in solution. That was a doubt when we (in oil industry where I worked in my career) found out 0wxx oils from synthetics were the best. They found out the proper detergent to use later to hold the soot. You could probably use a gas engine oil in a diesel if you changed at 100 hours instead of the more generally recommended 200 hours. Think I could get by with this on my Isuzu diesel because it seems so very clean, very little smoke or soot. However, since I'm letting it go 100 hours and several years, I'm sticking with the Castrol 5w30 for TDIs in it like for my JD tractor.
