2005 New Holland TC35A
Hi all,
I recently acquired a 2005 TC35A New Holland tractor and was wondering what size rear implements it should have. It is right at 5 feet wide. I received a 5 foot rear blade with the tractor, and it just seems small to me. I called a local Bush Hog dealer and asked what size rotary cutter I would need. He told me to buy a BH5, but it only requires 20 HP. I have 30 at the PTO. Would a six footer not make more sense? I plan to buy a box blade as well. Should I go with a 5 or 6 foot model? My tractor is a Shuttle Shift by the way. Thanks! Please forgive me for the misspelling in the title.

Loader or no loader? 2wd or 4wd? Tires loaded or not?

For your rotary cutter I agree 5’ would be perfect.

BMan2005,
It is 4wd and has R4 tires. No ballast as far as I know. It has a Woods 1009 front end loader. Thanks for the response!

Unless your avoiding extra weight with the tractor I highly recommend filling the rear tires with fluid. It’ll really help using that loader safety & function, also give you more traction for ground engagement implements.

Does your tractor have draft control?

Rear blade should be at least a foot wider than your rear tire width. If you dont, when you angle it wont cover the tires. Box Blade just want something as wide as the rear wheels. Not wider, or you risk catching it on something (at least this is my opinion).

Second the loaded rears, unless you are doing things that require a lighter machine.

I will certainly look into adding some weight at the back of my tractor. Would wheel weights work the same as filled tires? And no, it does not have draft control.

Thanks for the help! I guess I need to look into a wider rear blade then.

Rear blade should be sized to completely cover tire tracks when positioned at 45 degree angle. Either six foot wide or seven foot wide blade will serve you well.

If you will mow moderate length grass a six foot medium duty Rotary Cutter weighing 600 to 700 pounds, with a Category 3 drive line, is OK.
If you will mow long grass or venture into mowing bush, a five foot heavy duty (1,000 pound) Rotary Cutter with a Category 4 drive line will hold up.

I plan to buy a box blade as well. Should I go with a 5 or 6 foot model?

I suggest a 66" wide Box Blade. You must be able to clear an aisle for your rear tires with each Box Blade draw. Buy as heavy as you can afford.

I will look into getting a larger rear blade. I will mostly mow grass with it, so the six foot cutter may make more sense. Thank you for the suggestions!

If it’s mostly light grass you’ll be just fine then. If you hit thicker grass that bogs the engine you can take narrow bites at it. Like a 4’ cut and 2’ of the mower in already mowed area. Never done this but some on here have and that’s what they do.

Asked about the draft control because you could always go a little heavier on implements and use draft to find the sweet spot to allow the tractor to keep moving and get the max out of both working dirt. Either way, you can still use the position control for this just not as easy or precise more less for smooth finish if you did stall.

Get a 6-7’ blade, 7’ would be better running at a angle but stall you easier if heavy enough to get the full benefit of the blade. I would recommend at least a 2 way adjustable blade, angle & tilt, if you can spring for offset that’s a big plus if you intend to maintain ditches. A blade like this would be perfect for your tractor. Dirt Dog Manufacturing >> Rear Blades - 70 Series

Thank you! I’ll look into all of those things.

I would not get the 5' mower. That is what I use with 15 PTO-hp. A 6' would be much more useful. I mow a lot every year, between 24 and 60 acres depending on what is needed on the CRP ground. I have done this for fifty years. With a rough cut mower wider and slower is better. You get a better cut, you put less stress on the machinery, and your back and kidneys will thank you for not hitting the bumps and ditches as hard. If the grass gets too thick just take smaller bites or drop it down a gear or two temporarily. If all you are cutting is grass you do not need a heavy duty mower. Or really even a medium duty. Save your money. I cleaned up around a pond levee and down an old fence row this fall with the little tractor and the light duty Howse 5' mower and basically chopped up anything I could push over with my tractor. Small trees up to an inch and a half would make it bog down but never broke a shear bolt or killed the engine. The larger Ford tractor will chop up anything up to three inches if it is soft wood. That is a medium duty 6' on a larger tractor. It sometimes sounds like the entire mower is going to explode but even the light duty mowers are made for that type of abuse. Just make sure it has a stump jumper.

I made the mistake of getting a 5' blade for the tractor and it is okay for dragging dirt or gravel but takes too small a bite at 45 degrees pushing show. Wish I had bought the 6'.

As of now I’m leaning toward the six foot option for both. I may just stick with the five foot scraper blade I have now and buy a larger box blade, as it probably will be used much more often. Does anyone have any experience with the standard BH6 or BH216 from Bush Hog? I wish to stick with that manufacturer, as a local dealer sells them and he has been very good to me.

Check out the Everything Attachments.... EA 6 Way Deluxe Scrape Blade.
I bought it in the 6' length, and it is absolutely perfect.
I have my wheels set at 60" spacing.
The 6 blade adjustments are very easy to make.
In my opinion.....best bang for the buck in the marketplace.
EA products have become so popular of late, that you may have to wait for them to build you one.

You really need an 84" rear blade. A 72" rear blade at a 45* angle is only about 50" wide. I find that I typically run my rear blade at between 35*-40*. A 72" rear blade is only about 58" wide at a 35* angle. You need an 84" blade.

As far as box blades, this 65" unit is the perfect unit for your tractor IMO.

As far as the Bush hog, get a 6 footer and if need be, in heavy growth take a narrower cut.

Good luck with your decisions.

I have a tractor of very similar size, weight, and HP with shuttle shift. (34 HP, with 28.5 PTO HP)
I'm running a 6' tiller, 6' standard duty brush mower, 7' rear discharge finish mower, 7' rear blade and 6' box blade.
Handles them all just fine
