Problems with my Ford F-150

Another vote for a bad coil. I changed all of mine and the plugs on my 2002 5.4 at about 80,000 miles. Had the same symptoms down to the got worse with rain and humidity. I bought some aftermarket coils and they are still going strong at 110,000 miles.

Guess What! It was the COP #6, he moved it and the problem moved and he did other stuff to prove he got the right one.

$145 and I'm off to go pick it up as soon as my wife can haul me to the shop!

Thanks to all for all the great advice.

I have no other COP experience, but I knew it was missing, it felt like it was missing, and here it is, it was missing!

PS - I got WAY better advice here on TBN than on the F-150 online forum. TBN Rocks!

Thanks again,
Be well,
David

My 2001 5.4 in my sd same thing. Bad cop x2 and bad boots x1. The boot generally will break down and let water in around the plug and get arcing. I got 8 tested cop's from a scrapyard for 10$ each with good boots and keep them for spares.

If it happened once, it's probably going to happen again. I had 3 COPs modules go bad from 60,000 thru 100,000 miles on my 2001 F150 with the 4.6L Triton V8.

I have had 6 F-150's with 5.4L's, my dad has had 4 F-150's and 3 Expeditions with 5.4L's, and my BIL has had 4 F-150's and one Expedition.

Me and my dad have never had a single one go bad. My BIL has had 2 go out total. My buddy down the road has a E-250 with 160,000 miles on it and the 5.4L and he has had 3 go out at different times.

They do go out but the nice thing is they do not leave you stranded like a old coil and rotor setups.

Bigfoot, I LOVE the new Avatar!
PRICELESS!!!

David

Thanks. :) I thought it was about time. I've been on here for 3 years without one. Did a search for "bigfoot" images and found it. It was calling me! The name of the drawing was "Redneck Bigfoot."

Glad to hear that you found your truck problem.

I suspect my next will be a diesel.

One of my buddies got a used diesel Expedition and he said it get better MPG commuting into DC than most of the smaller cars he used to drive.

But this F-150 has been a great truck and I suspect it has "farm use only" plates in its future...

Havent read through all this yet. First thought is a spark plug is bad or has a crack inthe porcelin so its shorting out. Or a trully faulty O2 sensor will act like you have no power like that and will just come and go. My ranger had one go out (1990 model) and when it did it had no power, and would roll black smoke like a deisel under a load.

Read thru all the posts and saw you said it gets worse in the rain, was deffinitly thinking coil or plug then! Glad you got it fixed.
