Spent 3+ hours on the phone today with Microsoft tech and still not any better. Got a cheapie HP computer today to get back on line and will still try to fix the old gal. Microsoft tech said that tomorrow, they will take charge of the computer by remote access and have a higher level tech work on it. What are your thoughts on this plan? Dumped Norton on this new computer before doing anything else. Also dumped AOL, and a few other add on programs that I have no use for. Downloaded AVG anti virus and AVG spy ware package, and found that the computer came with 3 tracking cookies right out of the box! Smilies work now.

My dealings with MS and them taking control of my computer is not good. When the tech starts telling me to dump all my Internet and other settings to get access to my computer they have no clue. I have 2 firewalls to get to my computer. It would seems that is the first thing they need access to. But what do I know. :(

I'll be interested to hear what happens on this, because I'm getting ready to remove Norton from my computer as well. The last time I had a major problem and had to wipe the HD, before I did I tried to remove Norton, and not only would it not complete the removal process, it kept asking for files on the Norton disc, but then would not go get them - it's a real mess. I'm planning to go to AVG as well. Hope you get it worked out, I'd hate to have to wipe the HD again..........

If you did not manually purge the registry of ALL Symantec/Norton entries you did not get rid of NAV...

Norton can be really hard to get rid of. Using the Windows software manager apparently has failed in many cases. I tried; it locked; then although it was still listed, I couldn't do anything with it nor could I connect to the internet. It was acting as a firewall.

Download RNAV2003 from Symantec. RNAV stands for Remove Norton Anti Virus. It will get rid of it. Btw, I could not find it on the Symantec site even though it is Symantech software. I found it somewhere else.

Spent a lot of time with the Microsoft tech guy, but still not fixed. Using another computer now, and will work on that one till it is either fixed, or I reformat the drive and start over. Waiting for a call back from next tier of Microsoft help. Glad that I am getting a free service call.

Got the call back at 12:30 AM tonight and all is well now. The original tech transcribed the wrong number, and they kept getting a "not a working number message". He told me that they then tried directory information to get the correct telephone number. Took about 45 minutes with remote access for them to figure out the problem and to reload all the files that were either damaged or corrupted. I sat there looking at the screen and watched as the cursor flew around the screen checking things off and opening and closing windows, changing settings, etc. When it was all done, everything was back to normal. I am very pleased with the service provided me by Microsoft Support. The best part of it, was that it didn't cost me a thing. I didn't know it until I called, but I have 2 free support sessions with the original purchase of Windows XP Professional. I still have one left, and this one support session is still open in the event that I find any additional problems in the future that are associated with this event. I am happy now, and can go to sleep and not think about this any longer. Dusty:D

I am beginning to think that Norton is the root of all evil.

I have been getting these pop-up windows telling me that my virus protection has found a virus, but it has always been on the E: drive, my second hard drive. It makes a recommendation that you 'scan' for the source of the virus, so last night I decided to do that. It went right through C:, finding nothing, then on to E:, supposedly working in a folder called E:_Restore\TEMP. After three hours of toiling in this folder, finding some 150+ problems, it appeared to be unfinished, so I left it running and went to bed.

This morning, it was still running, having found some 750 viruses, worms, etc., still plugging away in that same folder, giving no indication of being finished, and now I noticed in the list that it had found at least two on C: even though it finished C: last night.

I decided to kill it, because if it can't do it's business in over 12 hours, it never will. Also, everything was slowed waaaaaayyyyyy down, like the processor was swamped. When I try to kill it via the button on the program screen, guess what? It hangs, just like the removal of Norton did when I tried to remove it from the ME system and I have to kill it with Task Manager.

Decide to re-boot. Shut down system, reboot.....to a black screen. Only way I can restart is through the Recovery Console of XP.

NO MORE NORTON ANYTHING FOR ME.
