Not really, we made the decision to put him down at the ripe old age of 18 come next month. He was suffering from renal failure. He was loosing weight from not eating no matter what we tried. Of course he was blind. The quality of life was just not there.

He tolerated me but really was my wife's dog if you know what I mean. An adoption, he weighed in at about 25lbs when we rescued him somewhere around 99' or 2000? We got him down to about 16lbs where he stayed with dedicated feeding. In the last few weeks though, he dropped about 3lbs. He was not barking anymore and worst of all, he would no longer bury himself in his bedding.

We had made the call to the vet this am and set up a 5pm appointment so during the midday, I dug a hole. It was dark when we finally got to bury him via flashlight. As we made dinner, the thoughts were coming on strong. It always strikes me, one moment the pet is there, we took him to the vet, did what we needed to do, brought him home and buried him, cleaned up his area and then nothing, just silence. Now it's just the memories.

PS, we have a min pin/rat terrier mix along with two boxers, and three other mixed breeds so it's not like it's quiet around here.

Bummer. Sorry for your loss. Nice looking dog. That's a pretty good, long life for a dog. You did well by him.

We have a cat going through kidney failure right now. Keeping him comfortable, but its just a matter of weeks, I believe. Wish they could tell us if they were uncomfortable or not. Just have to do your best and use your best judgement as to when its time.

It's always tough to put down a good dog. We put our 14.5 YO lab down back in July and I still miss him. 18 years old! wow, I didn't know dogs could live that long. We bought a black mouth cur pup back in September. Apparently they're expected to live to 16 years or so and supposed to be pretty hardy and free of health issues.

I know that empty feeling you have. With time, only the best memories will be how you remember him.

Sorry for your loss, and good on you for having the love and respect not to let him suffer on.

Very sorry to hear this, but you did the right thing for HIM and that's what makes you a good owner. We have a 16 year old Corgi, a 12 year old Border Collie-Corgi mix, and an 11-ish year old rescued Redbone Coonhound that are all very senior by their breed standards. We fear that when one goes, the others will follow in short order. It will be tough.

RainbowBridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Five years is way too young to lose a pet. Having been there, I can relate.

Those of us that care for our animals can always take comfort by sharing on this site. Thanks for all the comments.

My wife and I have been reflecting on our loss. Prince George or Georgie as he was already named when we took him in not only got along with but survived several other dogs including a rottie, a French Beuceron and a Belgium Malinois. We had gotten him through a Min Pin rescue. Ironic part of that was that the group had wanted him back after they found out that the rep had placed him with us even though we had no fence. LOL, we were some 1500 feet off a secondary road and never allowed any of our dogs to roam.

I might add that while we do respect the various specific breed rescue groups requirements, we have since gone to seeking animals on "death row". Ie; those whom have reached the end of their 30 day reprieve when they must be put down to make room for others.

Anyway, George gave us many years of enjoyment. The "demonstrative" min pin breed is one larger than their actual size. Plenty of mouth, somewhat like a cat in their independence, but very loving on their terms. With the breed, you learn to step over a rumpled towel or blanket as likely the dog is curled up under there. Georgie was our second min pin. Very different from the first being a male rather than the female we first knew. Knowing my wife, likely not the last at least for now. Again, thanks to all for understanding and sharing.
