Price of a cord of firewood

/ Price of a cord of firewood #71
Saturday, I ran three tanks of fuel through the chain saw cutting up a couple smaller trees and one large tree. In about the same time I spent in the gym, I burned around 1,400 calories! I think I burned more than that because the chainsaw engine seems to interfere with the heart rate monitor. All I was doing was cutting the tree into rounds so I can split. When I was splitting wood over the summer, I was burning up to 1,600-1,700 calories in a bit over two hours which produced about 1/3 of a cord of wood.

After splitting, I have to move the wood to the house.

Dan, do yourself a favor and cut the logs in 8 foot sections to trailer them home. Hopefully you have a better setup for cutting at home than in the forest. Cut them into 16" pieces.

It's $350 to $400 for seasoned oak in my area. But, we can only burn on an offical burn day-- only in California. Please take back all of the nuts and flacks that left your State for the Golden State.

I can't even give away seasoned and split oak...

Everyone is afraid of getting turned in to the smoke police in the Bay Area.

Every year a couple of big oaks topple when the 65+ mph winds come through.

In high school things were different... everyone was asking after a big wind storm came through...

Just goes to show how things vary by location.

You mean you can heat by wood fire on specific days only?

As far as all the "nuts and flacks"...sorry, you got 'em!
In fact I'd like to send you some more from Vermont!

The reality is you can burn just about anytime except when it is cold with cold being anything under 60 F

I consider myself to be a reasonably logical person and I'm having problems
following this statement.
Do they also forbid the use of a/c in the summer?

the inmates have taken over the asylum

Ever hear of 'rolling blackouts' ? :)

Yes... to a degree.

Not many have A/C in my area... those I know that do have a interlock where by the Utility can shed the A/C load if the grid is taxed.

Wood burners are fast becoming the the evil ones... just my take on the media position.

As far as I know... new homes are forbidden to have a wood burning stove or fireplace in my city.

There is a bounty for taking out your chiminey or coverting to a gas fireplace.

The regional air management district last I heard has about 20 smoke inspectors on no burn days and does a lot of media advertising through TV, Radio and Billboards about spare the air.

Looking back... the actual no burn days include all the Holidays and also when the temps drop.

Without fail... Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Years and Easter are always no burn.

The ironic thing is the ban applies to all wood heat even if you have a CAT equipt low emmission EPA stove installed with a permit.

The powers that be really don't want any wood burning... they also have bans on transporting wood from one area to another... I have friends that brought down wood each year from their place in the mountains and this too is a no-no.

I thought it was just a California thing and then learned similar exists in Thurston County Washington...

When I worked in Germany and Austria... the very stringent goverment actually encouraged wood for heat because it is a local renewable source of heat that lessens dependance on fosil fuel...

Last I checked... the Feds were offering a tax credit for certain stoves...

These trees were pushed over by a bulldozer to clear some land for us. The trees need to be cleaned up and are only a 100 feet or so from the house.

Usually what I do, is cut the tree up into 6-12 foot logs and move the logs with the tractor to the FPA(Firewood Processing Area). At the FPA, I cut up the logs, split the rounds and stack the cord wood. There is no access to the trees with a tractor, much less a trailer I don't own, :D so this year everything is being done in the woods and moved by the Mark I Human.

The problem with what I usually do, tractor the logs to the FPA, is that I have to cut up the logs on the ground which is a PITB(Pain in the Back) and risks hitting a rock with the chain. Since the trees I am cutting up were pushed down with a bulldozer the trunk is still attached to the stump so most of the trees are hip high off the ground which makes for easy cutting. I only have a couple more small trees, a large and one medium sized tree to cut up and I am done for awhile. Then I get to use the tractor to pile up the stumps and waste wood into a burn pile after doing some grading work.

Dan

I'm in the city of Klamath Falls (Smile, 25,000 in the county), we also have burn days. We have to call a local number to find out whether we can burn from one day to the next. We actually have only two burn periods each year.

PS: Sorry you're still in CA. My escrow is closing today on my last remaining asset in CA. HOOOOOOORAHHHHHH!

It's getting lonely here...

Just about everyone I know that retires pulls up stakes... many land in Oregon including my former Boss and CEO.

The reality in my experience is what happens in California eventually happens just about everywhere...

Also, the governors for California, Washington and Oregon seem to often work together... as opposed to California with Arizona and Nevada.

One of my good friends... a retired Doctor moved to Alaska... he has lived in many places starting his career as a Military MD and has said Alaska is the last frontier... on all levels...

Congratulations on your sale... timing was good if the property is anywhere in the SF Bay Area... multiple bidding is back the closer one is the Silicon Valley...

Supposed to drop below freezing tonight and no burn ban in place last I checked.

I noticed a rack of firewood for sale at a gas station today. I was just driving by when I saw the wood and sign. The rack was most likely a face cord, i.e., about 1/3 of a cord and they wanted $75 for it which would be $225 a cord.

NC does have a law about selling firewood by the cord and the notice is in the want ads in the paper. I don't really get the reason for the law. Here is a pile of wood. I am asking $X for the pile. If you agree to pay the price so what. The only problem is if I say that the the pile is a cord and it is not a cord but there are laws on the books to handle that situation.

You sure don't see the POlice running around measuring stacks of wood. :D

We let our fire burn out last night and likely will not start up the stove again until Saturday. It warmed up here a bit so we stopped burning 24 hours a day and only started the fire to heat up the house a bit during the day. The temps today will be in the high 60's and we will be in the high 70s by the end of the week before the temperature falls again over the weekend.

Later,
Dan
