Good brakes on the trailer should stop it pretty quick.

No, it has no brakes at all. That's why it stops so slowly. That little half ton truck wasn't made to stop 11,000 pounds or so. The six liter engine pulls it great. I have the Sierra C3 which was the forerunner to the GMC Denaly. It's the only 1/2 ton with that motor. They just didn't bother to beef up the brakes.
