\"Pre-Drill\"?

Something to think about on a Friday/w3tcompact/icons/clever.gif.

Watch any home improvement show and sooner or later you will hear the term "pre-drill". Ever since I've heard this term, it made me wonder, how do you "pre-drill" a hole? What the user of this term usually means is to drill a pilot hole to allow for some fastener to be inserted. If you "pre-flight" an aircraft, you are giving it the once over before actually flying. Does that mean "pre-drill" means measuring, marking, center punching before the hole gets drilled?

Pre-Drill means to drill a hole with a drill bit rather than try to punch through the wood with a nail or try to force a screw to make its own path. Helps keep the wood from splitting also allow you to countersink the head of the screw if you so desire. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

"Pre-Drill" is certainly an oxymoron. It's like a "near miss", if you nearly missed something doesn't that mean you hit it? Or how about a "hot water heater", if the water is already hot, why do you nead to heat it?

I'm sure others will think of many more.

The 'pre-drill' and 'pre-existing' terms have been a pet peeve of mine. Also 'pre-planned' and 'pre-board' (as in airplane boarding).

Pilot Drill might be a better way to call it.
Pilot drilling is normally done with a bit smaller then the ultimate hole size and facilitates assembly (screwing, nailing, etc.)

George Carlin used to use this in a bit - flammable, inflammable, non-flammable. What the f--- is this? You've got three words and only two conditions. Either it flams or it don't flam!

And you add in the confusion from some people thinking "inflammable" means "it don't flam"

This was in the same bit where he protested 'non-stop' flights, announcing he had no intent of leaving the plane till it was back on the ground.

Hmmmm /w3tcompact/icons/hmm.gif? Sounds vaguely reminiscent of a routine from Gallagher. Remember him, the Sledge-O-Matic guy?? He was a stitch, and he had a lot of those kinds of comments.
