We lost about 1/4 of our garden to deer last year. I planted more this year but plan on losing less to the deer, so I put up an electric fence. I used metal posts with insulators and just 1 strand of wire about 300-350 yards total length, so far because nothing is up high enough to attract them yet. I bought a regular charger that runs off 110v and plan on powering it using a 175 watt inverter off my pickup. Has anybody tried powering a fence in this manner? It should work, shouldn't it?

It doesn't take that much of a charger to power an electric fence. They make chargers that they claim will burn down a 6' diameter x 100' tall Oak tree if the wire touches them. Your connections and proper grounds will do more for your electric fence than any high priced charger. I can't comment on solar chargers as I have no experience with them.

I have had a solar charger on my garden's electric fence for over 10 years. I had to replace the battery after about 7 years, but that is the only maintenance I have ever had to do. It apparently works, because I have no more groundhogs or rabbits in the garden. My daughter's friends seem to always bump into it when playing hide and seek. They scream! :D

Mine is no longer made, but this one
Tractor Supply Company - Zareba 6-Volt Solar Operated Fencer, 3 Miles
at TSC is the replacement model.

Replacement batteries are under $20.00.

I recommend it.

I have a 6volt (lantern battery) electric fence charger, i added a small solar panel like the ones you use on a deer feeder and the battery last all summer long. I got it off ebay.

I have one of the old Sears units called the weed burner, and it will get your attention. I also have one of their 6V car battery powered units.
