Thinking about buying a Danuser F-8 auger from a guy up the street. It is a fairly low serial number, so I'm sure it's pretty old. It looks to be in good shape though and comes with a serviceable 12" auger. He is asking $650 obo. He said I can demo it on his tractor if I want. Input and output shafts seemed tight as far as I could tell. Did not see any leaks. What do you guys think about the price? Thanks in advance for any help.

$650 for a used auger seems like a huge ripoff when you can get a new 3-point auger for under $600. I'm sure the old Danuser is better built, but if you're fine with used I think you could easily find one in the $300-400 range that would suit you perfectly.

I got the TSC unit for $550 with a 12" (on sale) and it's dug a lot of holes and no problems at all. Mine was made by Speeco and is a combination of the regular frame with the HD gearbox (IIRC).

Thanks for input! That being said, I would prefer something heavier than the TSC unit as my diet is pretty hard. The Danuser is significantly heavier, so that should facilitate easier digging without the addition of added weight or a downforce kit. I plan on having him demo it for me so I can get a warm fuzzy before purchasing. I like the fact that the Danuser has a low gear ratio and can handle a 30" auger. This will come in handy when I have to do some replanting of trees.

I wish I could get a little more input before moving forward on this thing. My boss has offered to buy it for me, but want to make sure I'm doing.the right thing regardless.

I guess you gotta decide what your intentions are. If you are going to use the snot out of this digger, it's cheap. Danuser is the King of diggers in my opinion. That one will still be digging holes decades from now. You can definitely buy a cheaper one. Same with tractors, cars, trucks, Box Blades, Mowers, etc., etc.

If I needed a digger, I'd be all over that one. :)

Edit: Let me add. Unless you tear it up, this Digger will always be worth what you pay for it. Expect no depreciation.

I was waiting for you to nudge me in the direction I felt I should go. Lol! I think it will complement the 3910 nicely! Thanks for your input man.

The guy was super nice and I could of probably got it for less then $500 I offered him. We hooked it up and everything seemed good to go. I even told him he could borrow it anytime and I think that's why he went with the $500. I may have potentially made a new friend. He only lives 5 min from my house. My boss is actually paying for it as a nice gesture for going above and beyond at work, so I don't really care that I could have gotten it for a cheaper price. I think the guy probably needed the money anyway. I'm super stoked and can't wait to get it behind the 3910.

He told me he has used the lighter weight units and had to stand on them to get them to work. He said this one is just so much more heavy that it didn't need any extra help. That was my hole reason for going with this over a new one. I can still always fab up something to add extra weight if there is still a problem. The ground at my house has the tendency to be real hard, so I'm sure going with the heavier auger was a smart move.

They used to offer an attachment that fastened to the gearbox and created a 3-4ft long handle sticking out the rear of the digger. It would be used for an assistant to guide the bit for a precision dig. I looked on their site and it isn't offered anymore. Probably some OSHA safety violation. In my redneck area they were usually removed because they got in the way if you were backing up against something to dig a hole. The bit is just guided by kicking it around if needed. Not with the auger turning of course. Horror stories about that.

You must of been reading my mind, because I was just thinking about fabbing up something like that 2 minutes ago. Lol!

They were a huge safety hazard, all manufacturers have removed them. If you need more downforce, adding it hydraulically is the safe way to go.

My apologies... I had no idea that auger was $3200 new... you did get a great deal. Even if you rebuild and paint it you're in it for 1/3 the price new!

Oh yeah, he stole it, and he didn't even hafta use his own money!!!! :D

Good deal. I have the F-8 and it's the best on the market for its class (tractor). As you know it will soon a 30" auger. I think TSC Max is 18" or 24". Not that you'll pickup a hefty auger that size but knowing it's built that well is nice.

I picked mine up and the yoke was a tad lose. It's still been working just fine and dandy and has "paid for itself) over and again.

With that alas it's also nice knowing parts are still available which I will do eventually. If you go to their website and throw in your serial number, you can see which upgrade parts to get to make it safe (PTO shaft cover). M
There is a thread on here of a guy who cleaned his up. Looks great !

As stated, this tool should outlast you and your tractor, all while keeping its value ...

It's one of those tools that just sits around collecting dust, but when it's needed, it's amazing!

Nice to just throwing posts in, pull them and fill them with dirt, drill a new hole whenever you want in just minutes. The hardest part is hooking the thing up.

It's all good man. I'm just glad I didn't take my boss up on the nice gesture 6 months ago. I think this one was just waiting for me. :)

I have a very generous boss. I would rather him do things like this than give my a bonus in my check, as my wife probably would let me spend it anything I please. Lol!

Thanks a lot for sharing your input/experience with this model. I am super excited to get it home and put it to work. I'm really hopefully that the added weight this thing has over the normal offerings will make much easier to dig in my hard soil without resorting to standing (Lol!) on it. Worse case scenario, I have to fab up some way to add barbell plates to it like I did to my Ford 2600. :)

Once you use hydraulicly driven auger mounted on a front end loader bucket. You won't want to go back to a three point hitch, pto unit.

Not fortunate enough to have a front end loader yet. I'm sure I'll feel that way once/if I ever obtain one.

I just like the fact that I got such a stout piece of old equipment for a decent price and at the same time helped my neighbor out. I told him he can borrow it anytime he has a need to. That is what it's all about in my book.
