I am not sure if putting something in the bed will actually help. I have a 1/2" rubber mat in the back of the truck. I dropped a heavy piece of angle one day and I did managed to dent up the bed under the mat.

Yea roughly 20 pounds per square foot. I don't worry about price. I just happen to work for a steel fabricator.

I do like putting some soft wood in the trailer though. And if it was me I would oil it up real good too...

I don't think a rubber mat is going to help much with nasty large chunks of concrete, steel and stone.

I told you thst welike doing that But seriously now that you have asked the right question. I have been out in the construction world here for going on 22 years. In all that time I have never seen a truck bed with a liner in it.
Now back on the farm the manure spreader does have one of those liners in it, but thats just for keeping things from getting stuck.
Does that answer your question.

I still think the wood idea was a good one though.

Down in hurricane country in 2004 and 2005, lots of the biggest trucks and trailers were poly lined. Not so much with the little trucks and trailers. Some of the liners were holding together quite well and others were literally falling apart... but it was a very common thing for me to run into.

Well, I am exactly not sitting here with cash in my hand ready to run out the door! I'm still trying to figure out if this makes good sense... and, more importantly, where I can get the best bang for the buck. Yes, it's going to be expensive. I just need to know I'm not unnecessarily over-paying.

Given the modulus of polymers, isn't the busted up 'crete going to gouge the poly pretty quick? I mean if your worried about the steel getting dinged up... how long do you think the poly will last? (I have no idea.)


On a positive note, have you looked into any of the spray in bed liners? You can have the material sprayed without the grit so it hardens smooth. Might be cheaper than the liners?

Hi JB - Check out that RePro 1/2" liner. Download the PDF and have a look. It is rated for demo debris and even riprap. This is tough stuff!

Remember that my dump trailer is a weenie 10K trailer. The bed is only 10 gauge steel... a bit over 1/8" thick. That steel bed is no match for all this nasty concrete demo debris... which ultimately ends up being dropped in over the sides (as low as possible, but still dropped) via the FEL bucket, root/rock grapple or backhoe/thumb. Just can't always go in real low and gentle from an opened tailgate. Lots of these jobs take place in very restricted spaces.

One day I am moving concrete, stone and/or steel demo debris... the next day I am moving bookcases, sheetrock and trim wood for folks. Yes, I should have an old beat-up demo trailer and a flat, whistle-clean building materials trailer, but that's just not practical. One trailer must fit all... hence the interest in these "UHMW" poly liners. Unless I want to keep putting in and pulling out 3/4" plywood sheets every other day... watching them get destroyed fast... I need something that can serve both ends of the work spectrum.

Spray-in anything wouldn't have a snowball's chance in "you-know-were" against these ugly concrete pieces. It would just slow me down 97% of the time.

Now some folks here may think I'm a little old, senile and crazy... but I'm really not THAT crazy! I use separate trailers for hauling my equipment vs. materials.

I will admit that if my "on-and-off" plan to purchase an ASV RC-30 or RC-50 ever comes to pass, those nifty little toys could potentially be moved in the 10-ft long dump trailer (RC-30 no problem, RC-50 with bucket off). In that case, a "too-slick" liner could pose a problem, even for these tracked machines.

Essentially correct. That's the joy (and reality) of being a one-man show and not being allowed to store a dump truck on my residential property. Depending on the job and location, either the dump trailer or the equipment trailer will go out first. Often, I move the equipment trailer first just because I can do it the night before with little fear of theft or vandalism. In very safe locations with no kids around, the loaded equipment trailer will go out first.

I hear ya. Big part of the reason why we sub out all of our dump work. No "idle time" while on-site. Takes a little effort to figure out scheduling conflicts, but once you get that part down, you should save a bunch of time and money. It's nice calling for a load and having it show when you're ready to place it, or watch the waste leave the site.
Sometimes, being the one man show means realizing our limitations. Day labor, yep I'll use it. Sub work out, yep. My thinking is along the lines of letting a guy do what a guy is best at.
Dump truck drivers - drive and haul
dumpsters- easy way to get rid of site trash (without damage to your stuff!)
day labor - whatever we need most at the time, ie grunt work
sub - concrete, landscape, etc............

Think outside the box, you don't have to actually do-it-all to be a one-man show, you just want to be the guy that gets the biggest cut of the profits from the job

In our Dump trailer when we haul rip / rap or other types of shot or coarse rock, we use three of the horse mats to cover and protect the floor.

Right now, they are not fastened in, but have been thinking about how to do that easily, it is a pain to pick them up, and if they go under the load when unloading it is a real pain.

They do a fine job protecting the floor of the trailer, are cheap, easily available and easily replaced, and are currently sitting in the yard holding down the weeds with stuff I do not want in the dirt, but can live with being outside sitting on them.

In fact, on this latest job I got, I already told the client that a demo debris dumpster probably made more sense for certain of the things she's looking to get rid of... mainly because of how far I've got to go to get rid of it myself. I'd have had to charge her for that time... plus the disposal fee.

Unfortunately, she has arranged herself for the concrete and stone to go to a local reprocessor... with me providing the loading and transport.
