The speed obviously makes all the difference. I'm used to 50's style tractors/plows. (Most didn't have a 5th gear to pull it in...) The Mahindra 6000 does have guts to spare in that category though.... Based on his needs, as stated, he'd be well served with a 2x16 Cat 2 (based on the 3pt that he has). He'll be able to walk away with it in (I'm guessin') 4th gear (thats 4 Low). Again, it depends on what he can find and how much he has to spend. BobG in VA

If the 4WD 6000 has the same gear ratios as the 2WD version, then Low 4 is 5.6 mph, Low 3 is 4.5 mph @ 2100 rpm. Should be about right.
Fifth gear (High 1) jumps to 7.1 mph, probably a little fast.

When you're talking about "high speed" in regards to plows, we're generally talking 4-1/2 or 5 mph. For the first half of the 20th century, a "fast" plowing tractor might have been 2-1/2mph. By the early 50's, plow buyers wanted equipment to match the "new breed" of high hp tractors. In the early 50's, just about all the major plow manufacturers introduced their rendition of the "high speed bottom". Late, 50's/early 60's, a good many of them improved upon their designs one more time. The last round of changes were mostly to accomodate the ever popular semi-mounted plow concept, along with the need to plow even deeper than the "1/2 the width" rule of thumb.

Then no one bought any more new plows......

As a coincidence, high speed bottoms came along just about the time 3-point hitches were becoming popular on all brands. There are but a few models of 3-point plows that ever had the old fashioned "slow speed" bottoms.

Plow slow with one of those newfangled high speed plows and you'll get sod turned up on its edge.

We want to start a pumpkin patch that would entail about 5 acres of pumpkins plus another 5 acres of corn for a maze. Plus the market garden and food plots. I would also use the disc as a poor boys pasture renovator. Just for overseeding in rough pasture.

You confused enough now to spend your money? I think the thread kind of left what you asked and went into a philosophical plowing discussion. I don't think you're worried about most of what has been posted here, although all knowledge is good....Here's the $.02 question: What do you think? I was thinking 2 or 3 bottom plow with 8 or 10 ft disc. I'm hoping to plant a pumpkin patch, some corn, turnover for a market garden, wildlife food plots,etc. I have a tiller, but it's rough on it doing ground that's been in pasture for a long time. I'm probably going to end up with a lift type disc not hydraulic due to getting into rough places for food plots.
The Mahindra is 59hp 4wd. Quite a heavy tractor would need heavy duty implements.
I just wondering if there are many new products available? Used is fine with me. No dealers locally sell new stuff like this. I've seen Land Pride at TSC, but nothing as big or heavy duty as I would need. I did not see a plow like I would want from Tuffline however the discs would fit the bill.

I never did ask.... Where abouts in KENTUCKY are you?

As for the disc. I've always prefered a pull type wheel disc, but have owned a pick up disc of one sort or another for ages. My personal choice has always been the Massey Ferguson #25. It came in 6', 7-1/2', or 9' models. (I've got a 9'er) They do a superb job of leveling, plus they cut fairly deep for their weight. They're easy to spot. All the #25's have 2 levers that stick up above the hitch. They're for changing gang angle without leaving the operators seat.

FWJ I'm right smack on the TN/Ky state line. McCreary county in SE Ky. Mostly sandy soils here.
Bob you're right all knowledge is good and you don't even have to pay for it here. IMC made plows, at one time anyway, and given the quality of the cutter I bought from them I thought I would check them out.
Pretty much any plow would work for me. Long as I can get the ground turned over and run through it with a disc I can always run over it with my 90" tiller.
